Dog to a good home
« on: May 16, 2015, 01:30:44 PM »
If anyone is interested in, or knows someone who would be interested in taking a dog off my hands it would be greatly appreciated. She deserves a good home instead of going to a shelter.

Chesapeake bay Retriever

She needs someone with an active life style, she has loads of energy. She is trained it's just a matter of keeping her attention.

Here is what the AKC has to say about them. Sounds like a great dog! Especially if you have kids

"Chessies exhibit many traits that make retrievers popular pets: they’re loyal, happy, and affectionate. But Chessies are more emotionally complex than the usual run of gundogs. Chessies take to training, but they have a mind of their own and can tenaciously pursue their own path. They’re protective of their humans (especially kids) and polite, but not overtly friendly, to strangers. They make excellent watchdogs and are versatile athletes. A well-socialized Chessie is a confident companion and peerless hunting buddy. "

Interesting history to them

"While the Chessie originated in this country, he came from stock destined to sail from England. In the year 1807, an English brig wrecked off the coast of Maryland and crew and cargo were rescued by the ship Canton. Also rescued were two Newfoundland puppies, a dingy red dog named "Sailor," and a black squeak named "Canton." The two dogs, who turned out to be wonderful retrievers, were presented to the gentlemen who helped the shipwrecked, and many of the nondescript dogs used for retrieving in the area were bred to them, in addition to other outcrosses, such as the English Otter Hound, Flat-Coat, and Curly-Coated Retriever"

Ive trained several Chessie's tho Ive never personally owned one. One of them, Bosco by name, would jump into 34% water, swim hundreds of feet to retrieve a goose, swim back, and then shake off looking at you to get him another one. They are fearless in protection of their brood and loving in the home. They are very smart and can be pranksters, often playing little puppy games just to amuse themselves. They are loyal to a fault and can be a bit stubborn tho I wouldnt call stubbornness a breed trait.

They need exercise and stimulation. This is a working breed and be prepared to throw a lot of things for them to retrieve. They catch on quick, I wish I had a video of all the retrieve commands I taught those three in just one summer. I'd hate to be a home invader that chose a family that had a chessie guarding it.

Most of all they love to swim. Even more then Labs. A wonderful breed of dog.

Fostered a chessie retriever / border collie mix.   Same as the above - an amazingly sweet dog that wanted a lot of activity.
