Disco Reconnect
« on: June 06, 2015, 01:09:03 PM »
What is the usual setting that controls reconnecting after a network disco? Last night in the FSO I got disco'd out to the desktop and relogged, only to get bounced out again almost immediately. When I logged back in the second time, I was plunked down in the tower, not my Zero.

T'was especially frustrating, as I'd survived the whole frame - in a Zero! - and had my home base CV in sight.  *sigh*

Sometimes I hate the intardnet.   ;)

There's no setting you can affect to. After a disco you have some minutes time to relog, but your plane keeps the course it had during the disco. So if you were heading downwards, that would be your direction during your absence. There's no autopilot pulling the stick, so especially at low altitudes a crash is very likely. You may also get shot down during that time. The disco reconnect works best at level or auto climb flying in a friendly airspace. Or, should I say it works all of the time but you'd benefit the most in the said situations.

That's interesting Bizman. I thought the disco autopilot did its best to keep you level, flying straight in the same direction. And I think it's only 5 minutes before you pop. I'm not sure what the behavior is if you get back only to disco a second time right away.

Bino (ALL),

I'm not one to read BBS's normally (but I am looking for info on terrain/weather modification),

This one got me interested ...

(Bare with me, cause I'm extremely fatigued - It is getting REALLY close to time to (Re) Retire!):

I believe that when the AI that drives your plane in case of a disco was first brought into the game, it said that:

- you have (5) minutes to get back online.
- the AI will take over on the heading you were on when you disco'd, and initiate a slow climb (and in my experience it seem to go to some optimum power-setting (I've been discoing an awful lot these last few months).

I will go find the initial write ups on it and check back in if I am incorrect here.

I may be wrong in the direction issue. Rodent's comment makes sense and he's talking from experience. On the other hand, sometimes I've found myself in a situation where the autopilot (X or alt-X) hasn't been able to level the plane. Supposedly if you're in the middle of a furball furiously tweaking your trimming, your chances to survive during a disco aren't too good. A double disco may send all kind of misinformation to the server, so no wonder if you are in the tower after such.

As for the time window, 5 minutes is what I was thinking of but since I wasn't sure I hesitated to give any exact time.

You have 5 minutes to reconnect after you disco.  If you do not make it, your piloted object dies (unless you are driving a ship).

There is no AI pilot.  It is more like a string holding the stick in place after the plane is leveled.  If the plane is deemed damage beyond controlled flight, the plane will explode.  If the plane is shot down before you can reconnect, then it is as if you were in the cockpit and died.

You should get a message, when you reconnect, if you are not put into the cockpit.  Keyword being "should".

1st Disco - put back in flight (as per usual)
2nd Disco - you end up in tower every time
You break 'em, I fix 'em.
