What about this AMD processor?
« on: June 14, 2015, 10:25:01 AM »
I'm not an expert when it comes to AMD chips, I actually know very little about them at all. I've inherited a computer that has an AMD Phenom 9100e Quad-Core @ 1.8GHz. As far as I can tell, it's closest Intel counterpart is an i5 but I really have no idea.

Can someone help enlighten me on this processor please?

There doesn't seem to be a direct rival in the Intel catalog. This comparison is the closest one I could find within quad core processors: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-750S-vs-AMD-Phenom-X4-9100e You can choose any two processors on the right hand table and see how they perform against yours. For what I noticed, any of the ones I checked the price of the AMD was unbeatable.

The price doesn't matter if it lacks the muscle to run modern games. The Pentium G3258 is probably best bang for buck for games at the moment.

Rip, that wasn't the question. The OP already owns a computer with said processor and wants to know how he can expect it to perform. The motherboard doesn't support Intel CPU's.

I know but that processor looks awfully weak, it may struggle even with as easy loads as current games are for the CPU. With current AH probably even more.

Hey, he says he had inherited it. It can't be returned.

So? He wanted info on the CPU and I gave it.

Heh, we always seem to answer different details of any question.  :salute

I agree, it's a weak performer, but as you know I always try to find something positive to say even when the news are bad.

I will not buy any Intel products since they published their intent to discriminate on hiring, selection of assignments, and promotions.  In this day and age it is hard to believe.

Bend them to your will until they become Detroit!

In answer to the OP I would suggest that something closer to 3.6 GHz, No matter who makes it, would be better. You do not need an i7, unless you have other things you use your computer for (video creation, 3D content, etc.).

Sell it at a garage sale and put the proceeds towards buying a CPU that is actually worth the electricity needed to turn it on.

Thank you guys for the feedback, now I have another question. My understanding is that I can drop an AM3 socket processor into the AM2 socket on the motherboard and still run the processor (after a BIOS upgrade). Could I drop a processor like this in there and expect better performance?

I don't have the computer in front of me right now, I will get the motherboard specs later if they are needed.

I had this motherboard Asus M3A76-CM. It's an AM2+/AM2 board.
I put an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb in it.  The 965 is an AM3 Chip.
Never had a problem with the system.
