first impression from a returning player
« on: June 22, 2015, 04:51:32 PM »
did my first few sorties

- i have trackir and its killing me, i cant seem to get used to it but i force myself to keep trying and its a bi*ch
- some things are really familiar and come naturally, some are very hard to control
- i have very poor "feeling" of the planes i blame my joystick because its very mushy and lacks feedback but ofcourse its just an excuse
- trim! big issue for me, i cant seem to trim my plane to level flight and i don't even think of trimming while fighting. i started thinking about combat trim, never used it before but its so frustrating for me because the trim inputs feel "wrong" with  effects that have no proportion to the inputs
can someone explain the way combat trim work? advantages? disadvantages?

and last but not least, this is fun!

TrackIR takes a few weeks to master. I struggled with it as well, but you will get to the point where you don't want to fly without it.  :aok

A good profile from someone who uses it will help also. I got a couple from my buddies and picked the one I liked best.

When people told me that, I didn't believe them. It seemed harderr than it should have, to me. But they were right! Took me longer than it prolly should have, but now I really don't want to fly without it.

Combat trim automatically trims your plane level for the speed your flying. In most cases it's not a problem, but when you get slow it has a tendency to trim you nose up. In a 38 I can get it "stuck" in the air, and you are fighting it like crazy when slow.

A good trick is to set a button to turn on/off auto trim. Level, flick it on, then off and it will trim you for that speed.

As everyone else said, give trackIR time, you'll get it in a few weeks.

You can reduce your profile down to yaw and pitch. Then in the game you will inherit your saved head positions including your 6-view. This will feel more like your hat switch views are now smoothly following your head and then some. Once you are used to that which will be more familiar, you can add back more axis which will stop inheriting your saved head positions. At which point you have to learn how to become an arm chair contortionist.

Track IR drove me nuts until I set the Speed slider to 1.8.  Problem solved.

Vast majority of AH players use joystick hat... for a reason - AH view system is one of the best (in comparison to other games) when you can program location of the head according to view direction so you have best possible view. Configure views for hat and than use TrackIR (I never get used to it) - don't feel bad it takes time. Some never get used to it - especially when hat works that well.

First of all trimming virtual plane to level flight without feedback of a real stick and "but metter" is hard, that is why there is X - auto trim on level and alt X - auto trim on climb.

I usually have trim on elevator mapped to two buttons on joystick - for fast trim correction in fight and (X) - auto-trip for correction for a speed. Combat trim is not always good - it is only approximation of what should be (basically it is optimal trim for specific configuration for certain range of speeds), makes sometimes life simpler but sometimes it is death trap when you try to get out of dive.

See you around  :salute

Maybe I'm in the minority, but when I'm in a fighter I use a combination of hat views and a mouse to pan around and it seems to work well.

LOL, aint that the truth, although, with the ProClip, not so much; it's a vast improvement over the ol' baseball cap clip-on.

Dahmer made this video today and hope it might help take some of the sting out of Track IR and setting it up.
