Remains of US Marines found at Tarawa

An unmarked grave was recently found on Betio that contained the bodies of US Marines killed during the assault on the island. This was one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific and it is heartening to see that the work of recovery is still ongoing.

Yeah, Borneo made Tarawa seem like a cake walk.

I just finished Operation Borneo book, 1945. Damn that was a bloody bath.

I don't think there was a battle against the Japanese that couldn't be described as "one of the bloodiest".

This Battle is known to Marines as, "Bloody Tarawa".  A lot of SOP was developed from this battle that carried them through the Pacific the rest of the war.

Same with the Japanese, Tarawa forced them to change their invasion defense tactics.  After Tarawa, the Japanese started to use a defense in-depth strategy instead of a more active defense strategy that they had used in the past.
