Headtracking
« on: July 11, 2015, 09:05:23 PM »
So from what I see the three options I have at the moment are

1) Facetracknoir - cheapest, only requires a webcam

2) Freetrack - second cheapest, requires a webcam and some kind of IR/LED trackers, usually on a hat or glasses it seems.

3) TrackIR - Most expensive, but looks straightforward in use.

Looking for feedback from people who have used any of these (or another) and there recommendations.

Thanks!  :aok

Track ir

Get the track clip pro so you dont need to wear a baseball cap and look like a colonial.

Baseball caps are devices of the devil.

lots of profiles on forums as well.

There are no pies stored in this plane overnight

I've done 2 and 3  :D

For freetrack I wrote up my experiences here, http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,223422.0.html

For TrackIR I wrote up this one, http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,329017.0.html

Both work well, but trackIR is just better all around. The old "you get what you pay for" line covers it. TrackIR has more options and is easier to adjust to your settings. I have turned mine off for the last little while as I was having trouble hit a barn with any rounds so I wanted a perfectly steady/set forward view to learn those all important site pictures. Now that I can keep my hit percentage above 5% I'm looking to turn it back on.

I'm old school and have a very fast thumb when it comes to checking my views. Over the last 15 years of playing these games I have become very use to and quick roll of my thumb and my brain picking out a flash of "red" or even a dot that shouldn't be there. The movements of your head to do the same seem slow at first, but more than makes up for it by being able to center the con in your view even down to a quarter size hole in your blackout even if your looking down and out just infront of your wing root. Try that using a combination of keys!

The TrackIR also make it feel much more immersive. You look silly as hell leaning into turns and such in your chair but its the closest to feel like flying in a real plane you'll get.

Fugitive,
Just read the old post about Facetrack, very nice write-up.
One suggestion, instead of using a 9 volt battery, use and old cell phone type charger. I use one for my soundboard instead of a 9 volt battery.....

TrackIR!

Clip is essential if you live in a locality that includes sunshine during the day.     FroogleSim was testing, a few months ago, a rechargeable power supply for the clip which eliminates a power cable from the 'clumsiness'.  I use the included TrackIR power cord and have it tie-wrapped to my headset lead.

"Darn it, Man! Less fussing, more utility".  Yay TrackIR.

Agreed, with a couple of changes in components you could wire it to a USB cord. More options available these days.

I'm glad I invested in a TrackIR tho. The Face track was a good and cheap way to see if I liked it and it liked me  :P
