Good resource on Moscow Defense
« on: July 12, 2015, 07:28:51 AM »
I had found a good resource about Moscow defense during 1941.

It is memories of a test pilot that served in command of Moscow defense during this days.

http://testpilot.ru/review/300x/shield.htm (Russian)

It is quite translatable by google - good enough to extract data on units and equipment. Location of the airfields and general information about operations.

For example some information: location and equipment of the PVO units at the beginning:

11 IAP - Yak-1 Kubinka  (Central defense air field)
67 IAP - Hurricane at Kubinka
35 IAP - Yak-1 or Hurricane at Khimki (not clear from the description which one of them)
120 IAP I-153 Alferovo
121 IAP I-16 Chertanovo
233 IAP MiG-3 Tushino
34 IAP MiG-3 Vnukovo
564 IAP LaGG-3 - Maloyaroslavets
125 IAP - P-40B/C at airbase of a research institute

If I would design an even I'd do following substitutions:

Yak-1 -> Yak-7b  (actually Yak-1 had better performance )
I-153 -> I-16
MiG-3 -> P-40F (*)

(*) P-40F has best performance at high altitude around 20,000 feet like MiG-3 which was more than competitive to German designs at high altitude and was a successful interceptor.

Actually besides weapons MiG-3 had way better performance.

Maximal speed P-40F best at 6,100m (20,000 ft) of 585 km/h (364 mph)
Maximal speed MiG-3 best at 7,800m (25,600 ft) of 640 km/h (398 mph)

Speed at sea level: MiG-3 is 505 km/h (314 mph)
Speed at sea level: P-40F is 490 kh/h (305 mph)

Climb to altitude: P-40F 6,100m (20,000 ft) in 11,6 min
Climb to altitude: MiG-3 8,000m (26,250 ft) in 10.28 min

Wing Loading: P-40F 176 kg/m²
Wing Loading: MiG-3 155 kg/m²

Power/Mass: P-40F 0.15 hp/lb
Power/Mass: MiG-3 0.18 hp/lb

Armament: P-40F - 4 or 6 M2 MG
Armament: MiG-3 4 - 1 × 12.7 mm USB + 2 × 7.62 mm ShKAS MG
