Staggers In - Grabs a bunk.
« on: October 25, 2001, 11:18:00 AM »
Hi All!!!

Wayne "Ratbo" Canino here. (formerly =B17= and NO - not the guy from the AW2 beta)

I'm still in shock about the impending death of AW. But when we finally come around and learn the games nuances, Dawn and I have a Ploesti scenario in the can just wating to be adapted.

For those clamoring for "more scenarios", remember something.  When AW was at it's *best* there were 2 perhaps 3 good scenarios a year - IF that.  It was part of the decline that saw the constant "scenarios till you barf" approach that cheapened the whole scenario mystique.

It's quality not quantity.     :)

Ok Wayne, we MIGHT let you stay here  ;) Just as long as you promise to not wear that sheep costume to the CON.

Anybody know if Jordi is gonna make the conversion?

Former AWer here as well, and yeah, the scenario's we're the most fun you could have in AW but they had some pretty significant problems associated with 'em that really detracted from the experience.
They were very difficult to organize and participants spent a huge amount of time getting ready and waiting to take off...really turned alot of people away from them. I'd like to see them designed so that strategically, you werent rewarded for holding people on the ground.
Aircraft choice was almost non-existent, you had to fly what was assigned and that was it, especially for walk-ons.  Most of the bomber force were frustrated fighter jocks.
In my view, having 2 or 3 a year is way too few.  I'd like to see at least one a month, and yes, I would gladly volenteer time to make that happen. If their were more of them then people wouldnt mind flyin the unpopular planes in one if they knew they'd get first crack at the next one.
In AH I'd like to see score carried over to the MA score and I'd like to see participants awarded with alot of perkies as a reward for supporting the effort even if ya dont get to fly your first choice.

Hey guy )

Just remember--

in '98 Scenarios didn't start until around June because of AW III just starting, then there was

Target Germany
Guadalcanal
Afrika '42
Kursk

in the last half of the year.

Then the next year was was a real influx of scenarios some of which I missed but included...

Battle of Britain
Sicily
Longbow (with three phases of six frames each, this was three scenarios in one)
Somme
Cartwheel (two phases of five frames each)
Pearl

Sounds like more than '2 or 3 a year, if that' to me.  During the 'decline' of 2000-2001 there were actully fewer scenarios.

Verm,

I saw a guy named Jordi on last night.  He was being greeted like an old friend by some other new guys and some older members too.
Petals floating by,
      Drift through my woman's hand,
             As she remembers me-

To Crash and Anrky

1. The very nature of a scenario is "you fly what your assigned to fly" and if your a walk-on, it means you didn't sign up so's you take what you gets.

2. Of the second year of your list, only Longbow and Cartwheel were "mega-scenarios" the others were second string type. I flew in them all and was on Command Staff (in one capacity or another) for all but 1. In fact that's what lead to my semi-burnout and forray into EQ.

In the "Golden Age" of AW - scenarios were a "much anticipated" thing - not fly off the shelf events....

IMHO - too many people started running scenarios in AW3 - and it diluted the events.

PS to Verm : Of course the sheep suit comes with me. But reading the boards I see people here "kill" sheep. They need to be taught the finer points of animal husbandry.  :)

Yeah, Longbow and Cartwheel were 'mega-scenarios'

Sicily was I think 5 frames.  BoB was 6.  Somme was WWI, and I think 4 frames, maybe 6.  Pearl was 6.  Not really second string stuff--full blown scenarios if you ask me.

I attended them all, too, except for the one or two I couldn't remember the names (I think one was Midway, a RR scenario)  Even did some walkon herding to help out that year, too.

And, yes, I did get burned out, too.  I was one of the first to scream at DOSE, "ENOUGH!" when he started posting about getting even more going.  But does this mean we should only have one scenario a year here?

Longbow was incredible

my sqd was to fly high cover in p38's, we were to meetup with the b17's over the channel. as we neared the rondy point i saw low dots at 9 o'c, more and more dots, when we were over them i rolled my wing to get a better look, 4k below me was a bomber stream of 50 or 60 b17's all in sqd formations, you could see small groups of escorts at the edges............it looked like something you'd see on the history channel

LOL  - first I need some TIME to sit down and read the DOCs.

Sheesh! For $15 a month you'd think Dale would send them purty wimmins to my house to teach me the game!
