graphics software
« on: August 28, 2015, 10:17:25 PM »
Quick question about drawing programs. This isn't really related to AH. Sorry about that. If that goes against the rules of this forum then by all means trash this post. But yall are the only circle of friends I have that would know about graphic design programs. I myself am a computer retard. I have a 9yo daughter that loves drawing pictures on the standard paint program that came with the computer. She is wanting to move on beyond that to something better and I think she is ready and motivated to. What programs would yall recommend that are good and reputable that go beyond paint? She doesn't need photo shop. She needs something that she can draw a pic from scratch on. And nothing too expensive. She's not going to be doing it professionally after all! Thanks for any advise.

Hell, who knows, maybe in a few years I can have her design some cool new skins. lol.

I would suggest GIMP.

http://www.gimp.org/

It has a lot of the functionality that Photoshop offers, but is a bit simpler to use (IMO), is free and is very lightweight. I had a computer running an Pentium 4 at 2.4 GHz 512MB RAM and GIMP ran no problem (though as file sizes got larger it did start to choke). It is also capable of working just like MS paint at a basic level; create a new image, select your tool, go to town.

Best part is it's completely free.

GIMP is free, so you should start there. There is nothing wrong with conventional pencil and paper. Every digital artist I know of started drawing when they were young, but it is never too late to learn a new media. You should encourage this with pencil, pastels, charcoal, inks, watercolor, oils and any thing else you can afford.

Does she like painting, or line drawings? I would suggest GIMP, except I don't know it at all since I use Photoshop. Either one should be great for painting. For line drawings the vector format is better, as in Illustrator. Every digital artist in every walk of like (movies, advertising, games) is also a Photoshop user. All graphic artists should know Photoshop and Illustrator well.

BTW, Autodesk Sketchbook is free now and it supports vector drawings. It cannot replace Illustrator, but hey it's free!

If she sticks to drawing on a computer, or tablet, then you might consider two things. One is a drawing surface, like a Wacom Intuos, or Cintiq. I found Intuos to be a disconnect because you are looking at one surface and drawing on another. The Cintiq fixed that because it is also a display, but it is not a toy and not entry level either (expensive). There are other tablets and surfaces, but you should probably wait to see if she is still doing this in her mid-teen years.

EDIT: I don't know what there is in pre-teen tablets, but I bought a boogie board (LCD writing screen) for my son. It can be used for drawing also.

BTW, there are two types of Boogie Boards. The one I bought for my son (pre-school age) does not support sync operations (no memory card), but there is a more expensive model that can store a thousand pages or more.

https://www.sketchbook.com/ , Also has a mobile version. I have it on my tablet and use it to "doodle"

http://www.serif.com/free-graphic-design-software/, is also has a free version and is easy to use.

https://www.madewithmischief.com/buy , has a free version but only costs $25 for the full version. Mischief is cool as its a vector based program and has an endless canvas. You can zoom in and out and not lose the resolution. As you draw you can keep moving the canvas to  a clean spot to draw more instead of opening new projects.

Drawing on a tablet while more like drawing on paper I find harder as you have to keep something in between your hand and the surface of the tablet or it recognizes that "touch" and you get all kinds of input. The newer more expensive apples and such have the capability to tune it to "see" only the stylus.

I love my Wacom. Have no problems draw on the tablet while watching the monitor. When my son first started he had an issue but soon got over it. Like TrackIR, it just takes some getting use to it.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Thank yall for the input. She started out drawing the conventional way with pencil, pens, markers, paint, etc. Now, she is moving on to the computer. I'll start looking into all the stuff yall have suggested. Thanks again!

Paint.net is easier to learn if you've used MS-Paint.  It handles layers but uses more memory than necessary when doing so.

Gimp has more capability and is better at handling layer memory.  Like Blender the UI can be a bit confusing having been developed by many people in the Open Source community.

I've seen some pretty impressive drawings made with Paint and a mouse, drawn by a girl in her early teens or so. Found some on the 'net, too: https://www.behance.net/gallery/9514875/MS-Paint-Drawings "No Photoshop. No copying. No color taking. No tablet, only mouse."
