Alpha skin viewer
« on: August 30, 2015, 03:33:54 AM »
Using the alpha skin viewer I am not able to move my viewpoint position using shift or alt + right click as on previous versions. I can only change the viewing angle from the default viewpoint using right click. Is this a bug or is there some new way to change the viewpoint position?

I don't have time to give a better description but try the ASW etc. keys on the keyboard.

I too miss the alt + right click but figured I was just an old dog that hates new tricks.

Thanks Machnix, got it now.

For anyone else who's confused its A and D for left and right, Q and Z for up and down and W and S for zoom in and out.

In the previous notes, it said skins are not supported. I suspect the quirks of the skin viewer are due to this not being a priority yet. Call it a hunch, but I think this will be fixed before alpha goes live.

I took the "skins not supported" bit to mean that they can't be seen in the Alpha game yet. I have got the Alpha skin viewer to work OK, although it does irritate me as I keep trying to use the old shift + right click method.

Just think how nice it is that all editors use the same keys.

Amazing what you can do with a ball mouse, right click and those key board keys.

I get it, you W in all the way inside the fuselage. Then the mouse spins the plane in all directions. Then you S out for your view. The farther away from center, you are sliding the plane around on a giant sphere.

I've never used the keyboard to move my viewpoint in the TE, I didn't know you could. What I do is to have the map and editing windows up together on different screens. Using the mouse I drag the viewpoint position across the map screen to where I want it and then shift my viewing angle on the editing screen.

Would it be possible to introduce a feature to the skin viewer to save viewpoints? For instance lets say I am editing the textures on the gear legs of a plane. I move to a good viewing position between the legs and hit a "Save Viewpoint" button. I then name this viewpoint "Between Gear Legs" and this appears in the list of viewpoints for that plane (along with "Home" and "Cockpit" etc.) whenever I load that shape.

That would be useful. Fine-tuning certain areas to see things is a real PITA sometimes. Duplicating it is no less so when you have to return to that area several times.

Saving 1 view point would be simple. It is already part of the standard edit view system I would just have to add save/load buttons If that would cover 95% of what you need I would go that way. And take maybe 15 mins to write.

More then one view point would require  more work because you now need to save, save as, load which one and have a delete function. 2 - 8 hours work.

One saved viewpoint would be a big improvement as it would let me carry straight on working from where I left off last time.
