at the risk of bursting into flames... I woulda thought for total air superiority and unchallenged bombing runs, the HQ would be the MOST strategic target for bomber geeks...
It's just that very little of the arena population give a hoot to actually defend the thing that affects their gameplay so much. Ok Ok Ok you dont want to climb out to their alt.... (Insert wish)... 30 of our 88mm flak guns around HQ would be a nice touch no?
You should focus on killing the HQ when you almost have a victory. You kill the HQ to take the last 2 or 3 bases you need without the enemy knowing which bases you will attack. That is the strategy to killing the HQ and winning the war.
Now, if your team still has 25 bases to capture, while one person goes and hits the HQ. Two things will happen, one the person who killed the HQ has taken the fun out of the other team and they will log and do something else. 2, you won't have a strategic team that wants to go capture base after base, therefore, you killed the fight for everyone else that was having fun, while also not coordinating your team to capture bases, thereby making the map boring for your team as well.
This is a combat game, not lets see how many people we can get to log by being a chooch. 95% of the time, the team that kills the HQ still doesn't capture any bases. It's a clear statistic I've seen over an over again. A lot of times, your team has no idea their HQ is even down. Why waste 2 hours of your time attacking the HQ when it literally does nothing to directly benefit your team?
You'd be much better off going base to base and killing ords.
You'd be much better off using a 110 raid with 7-8 people to demolish a nonpopular base for a quick base grab. You'd be much better off going to strat factories and knocking them down.
There are so many other better options to be destructive on the map without having to kill the HQ and the best part is, you slowly weaken them without them realizing it, that way people still enjoy the game and it still serves a purpose for offense and defense. This makes capturing bases much easier for your team.
