Best brand currently for power supplies?
« on: October 21, 2015, 03:36:49 PM »
So my 6 year old Corsair TX 650w PSU died. The computer suddenly restarted one day then immediately shut off. Trying to turn it back on just gave the computer a small burp of power, but even the motherboard status LED didn't have time to form a zero before it shut off again. And there was a smell, a little inside the computer case but 90% from the PSU exhaust. Here's hoping it didn't take anything with it.

Looking at this EVGA one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=17-438-026&FM=1

Wondering if anyone has a better suggestion? Bad experience with EVGA? Did I accidentally link a smartphone charger? ;)

Seasonic is about the best brand you can get, today.

EVGA does not make any power supplies.  The repackage power supplies made to their specification (mostly).  They use FSP, Enhance, and Etasis to build the supplies.  Those manufacturers are known for middle of the road power supplies.  Not great, not the worst either.

The Corsair 650TX power supply was made by Channel Well.  Many of the Corsair power supplies are made by Seasonic.  Mostly the higher end power supplies.

Huh. In that case I could use a little help finding a 650w from Seasonic, not sure exactly what I need from it, except I know that a modular one would be nice.

My specs are ATX LGA 1150 mobo, GTX 770 gfx, 1 dvd-rw drive, 2 7200rpm hard drives.

Let me know if I need to post anything else.

I think this one will work, unless I'm missing something, which is why I posted here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=17-151-088&FM=1

That's a good one.

You were not aware EVGA, Corsair, Thermaltake, Antec, and many others do not make power supplies.  There are only a handful of power supply manufacturers in the world and they make the supplies for everybody.

Seasonic is one of the largest power supply manufacturers in the world.  They are the only OEM manufacturer who makes their own supply and supplies most of the supplies for a significant percentage of other resellers (Corsair, Thermaltake, EVGA, and so on).

Doesn't FSP make their own supplies, too? Or am I misunderstanding something?

I was not aware FSP was selling their own brand.  Yes, they make their own.  They are considered a decent middle of the road power supply.

Here's an article over at Tom's Hardware that you can use to find out who manufactures power supplies:

I have an EVGA SuperNova 750 G2 (Super Flower IIRC) that comes with a 10 year warranty.   Considering the ease of RMA's with EVGA in the past and the very positive reviews on their PSU's, I decided to get one at Micro Center.   My HX750 went tits up, the Corsair took my MB with it.   So I upgraded the case as well, as getting a new MB.   Went from a Fractal Design Arc Midi 2 to a Corsair Obsidian 750D and four Prolimatech Blue Vortex 140's as a fan upgrade.   Many regret on not getting this case instead of the Fractal.

Almost every supply in that list is made by Seasonic.  I am saying "almost" just to cover my bases, because I am pretty certain all the ones on the first page are made by Seasonic.

Not sure that the Thermaltake one is a re-badged Seasonic.  But anyways, its true enough, if I were going to answer the OP's question directly: the best brand is currently Seasonic.  It has also historically been Seasonic and likely to remain Seasonic in the future.  Just in case they slip up or there's a re-branded Seasonic available at a lower price, I think its a good idea to do some research, review-reading, and deal-finding, none-the-less.
