New guy what plane should I start him in?
« on: October 24, 2015, 10:23:23 AM »
I'm trying to help start someone brand new, never flew a flight sim. Not sure what plane to put him in? maybe a spit or something?   :joystick:

Obviously this is from dead scratch.  We'll probably be in the training arena where I'll try to get him off the ground and let him learn to aim at a flying target...

What's the best starter aircraft? he doesn't have a flight style so everything is open.

Consensus seems to be one of the Spits.  There will be many who say something like "Just pick one plane and learn to fly it well," but the Spits are the easiest to fly.

The F2b is a nice primary trainer for basic flight instruction since it flies slowly.

If you use the dot command ".show rv" in the hanger you get another nice trainer for offline or the training arena but no guns.

If you want to start with a high performance fighter the Spit 8 is nice.
The clipped wingtip Spit 16 is similar with a higher roll rate but poorer turn, and 2 .50's instead of the 4 .30's.

The P-38's are newbie friendly because of the nose guns and lack of torque issues but they don't turn like Spits.

The TAB key lets you select a target for the lead computing gunsight aid in the TA, CTRL-TAB let's you target a friendly.

Okay I have him in a spit just getting used to flying and shooting ground targets for now to get the feel.

It seems like it's not letting me be in the same area as him in the training arena? it's got like 9 diff maps and he's in one and I'm in another.

How do I get actually in the same map with him?  Sorry for the hassle I've just been gone so long I don't know.

Also, thank you for the help.

Duh I think it's cause we're in diff countries!

Well they don't call the Spits trainers for nothing. They're very easy to fly and have a decent gun package. They do everything fairly well (turn, roll and climb) and aren't apt to snapping into a stall. Visibility is good too. I'd go with that. Newbs can get kills in them.

If just getting off the ground and landing again is what you're looking for then a Zero or Oscar is better. They both have excellent slow speed handling and are nearly impossible to stall. Fighting with them in the late war arena is a challenge as they're so much slower than the other planes. They're simply out classed.

You can be in the same area. Just make sure you're both at the same field. You may know where you are but the newb might not know how to read the map yet. So cheat. Do a .goto <gameid> with the newb's id and you'll be transported to the same field. There's a space after .goto.

Once you're in the same country, use Go To on the clipboard roster. Join is another useful command.

The KI84

It's very versatile in all aspects of aerial combat. Has a great roll rate, can teach you the vertical aspects to combat fighting and will help you learn ACM. It's quick, teaches you to spiral dive over opponents because it doesn't dive well, has a lot of gas and the guns are great. Its really one of the best planes to learn first among others to learn how to fight. It's also one of the best defense planes in the game. It's one of the best planes to roll out of the hanger when your base is being attacked.

I like it better than the spits because it feels more balanced in the stalls and has multiple flap retractions. However, for new pilots, only one flap retraction is easier to learn when learning how to fight with flaps.

Had a good first practice, we went with Spits. I agree about the Ki84 and the Zeke and Oscar all good.  Thanks for all of the help!

He was actually able to land rounds on me and take off and land so good start!  :rock

A good exercise for a new pilot is flying a loop 3 ways, with no stall horn, with stall horn all the way around, and with stall horn plus stall buffet at the top of the loop. Practice oblique as well as vertical loops at different speeds to get a good feel for turning well.

Waaaay back,  :old: , I had people start in Spits. Relatively easy to fly and learn in, building a strong foundation. You don't have to dive too deep into flaps or trim but can learn both in them. Land, carrier and other models and options to explore and choose.
If they were using a mouse I'd have them in a P-38.
Once they got that foundation, whatever they do will have a strong base to work off.

Think the TA issue covered enough.
Have them turn Stall Limiter OFF before they get used to it. Harder initially but in the long run better not to handicap yourself with it. Combat trim is OK for now.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.
