Hellcat vs Corsair - views
« on: October 28, 2015, 12:43:53 PM »
Over the years, I have seen many F4U drivers complain about the views from their favorite plane.  They don't know how good they have it.
Let's set the record straight, shall we?

All of these screenshots were taken in the Late War Arena, at the same field and on the same runway.  These views are all easily duplicated with the arrow keys and the pgup/pgdown keys on your keyboard.  Set up your view, hold and hit F10 key to save the view.

Six views:

1A six:

-1 six:

F6 six:

Both of the Corsairs have a full rear view to at least one side, depending if you set the view to favor right or left side.  The Hellcat's tail has a huge blind spot, especially the low six.  Adjusting the Hellcat's six view to favor one side like in the Corsair, results in an even worse view than having it centered.

High six views:

1a high six:

-1 high six:

F6 high six:

This is the only view that puts the Hellcat even with the Corsair, arguably superior, due to no bars off to the side.

Back left views:

1a back left:

-1 back left:

F6 back left:

This is where the Corsair's views absolutely trounce the Hellcat's.  Not even a contest here.  The F6 pilot cannot see his v-stab at all.

Back right views:

1a back right:

-1 back right:

F6 back right:

Same as back left.

As a Corsair driver, you should use the back left/right views and ignore the straight back view to get rear views as good as almost every plane in the game.

And stop crying.  :neener:

I think my F6F views are set up better that that.  Here's 8 views:

Direct 6.  Actually not much different than what you posted:

These next two aren't actually set but I use my keypad for views and always have my thumb near the arrows so these are easy to get to and I quickly flip from side to side through my direct six view to get a total picture.

Rear View with Left Arrow:

Rear View with Right Arrow:

Back to set views.

Back Left:

Back Right:

Back Up (yours might even be better than mine here):

Back Up Left:

Back Up Right:

I don't really feel I miss anything.  It was far worse in the past before HT tweaked the rear views on the Hellcat and frankly, if someone can sneak into the small spot you might not be able to see you probably have bigger SA issues.

I don't like the high 6 view in the F4U cuz of the armor. Other than that its not bad.

That's not an armor plate over the pilot's head, it was just there to protect the canopy as it slides back when opened. Later 1Ds and most -4s removed it altogether.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

That plate is just sheet aluminum, which means it's only armor against spitballs and rubber bands.

Here are images from a real F6f-5.  The  Bradly Field air museum in CT was kinda enough to take them for me.

Then one has to ask, "why does the pilot manual call it armor?".  <shrug> I don't know

Those match up pretty close with the AH Hellcat.  You wouldn't happen to have similar pics from a real Corsair, perchance?  Would love to see how it compares to our cartoon version.
