Film shows an approximation of what was going on so the "shot passing through" was just a clean miss. The hit was a hit but angle and distance are figured in on each shot. So the damage was calculated for the angle the hit was at, the penetration and so on and it wasn't enough to kill him.
You can send the film in, but odds are that you just didn't hit him enough or the right spot for better penetration.
