WGr21 rocket use
« on: November 17, 2015, 09:29:44 AM »
 :salute

Hope your all having a good day. I need some explanation on the WGr21 rockets used on various German fighters.

So far I know that they are time delayed rockets that detonate 1.5k from where they were fired. However, this is all the information I know on them.

Does anyone know other details on them such as their area of effect, and how many rockets it would take to bring down a plane if I don't get a direct hit. Also, any good techniques as to how to aim them? Because they are quite tricky to hit anything with them.

Salute!  :salute

IIRC the Wgr's are timed,2.2 seconds.    Lusche can correct me it I have the wrong time..... :rofl

So that would mean depending on direction of fire, rear aspect or frontal you would need to use a different range.

I think the 1.5 would work in a frontal attack but you need to be slightly close for a rear attack, also closure rates can come into play.

I have seen a whole formation go down with a single rocket that exploded in the middle of the formation but usually you need 2 rockets to take out a formation.

They will explode on ground target also, again IIRC they have aprox 150LBs of explosive power.

The biggest issue with using them is the drag on the airframe, they will slow a plane about 20 MPH and even after firing the drag is still there.

I hope I answered most the question,if you have an others just ask!

   YMMV.

Using them your speed will play into how far they go before detonation. I went to the trouble once to build a gunsight for the A5 to test them. I think your initial range hard standed is around 800yds. Then adding say 300mph to that gets you about 1100-1200yds. In real application the attacker wanted to be slightly higher up when firing.

I would have to remake it. I was curious how close hi tech modeled it to German tech specs.

In WW2 this was launched at groups of bombers, not as a Kentucky windage rocket we try to use it for in the MA against single aircraft or a single bomber box. It's real usefulness came in causing the bomber formations to break apart out of fear rather than hits and destruction of bombers. Very often the aircraft launching the rockets did so from high and behind into the large formations. Once long range escort fighters were available, these attacks became suicidal.

The tubes had explosive bolts to allow jettisoning. The manuals warn against simply jettisoning other than under the most dire circumstances since the war materials the tubes were made of were scarce.

It would be great to have this functionality in game.

We have wished with documentation until our finger tips were numb. All planes mounted with them had additional circuitry installed for firing the rocket and detonation of the explosive bolts in the manuals. Hitech must have a practical reason to make upping with those tubes a steamy tower love affaire for many. It's not like we have a shortage of materiel in our game......maybe Hitech can program a German language popup arse chewing when you get back if you survive and had to jettison the tubes.

Wgr21's where heavily used as ground-support close after D-day to support ground operations.
My ammo last for 6 Lancasters, or one Yak3.
