Comcast Internet Services
« on: December 01, 2015, 03:30:10 PM »
:bhead I was just informed today by a Comcast representative that beginning with Jan/16, anytime I am in the game of Aces High, I would be charged a "data usage" fee. The first 300GB is free and thereafter, if I exceed that amount, I will be charged an extra $35.00 on my internet service bill and each 300GB after that, an addition 10.00 will be added!
Is there anyone else out there who has run into the same thing? This nothing but a rip off of Comcast services!

The cap used to be 200 gigs a month and now they have increased it to 300.

Unless you are downloading many movies, entire games and/or file sharing 300gigs should never be a problem for Aces High.

They actually specified "Aces High" ?  As if that is not one of their "approved" uses of their  internet services and would therefore require and extra charge?

Sounds like "Restraint of Trade" to me.

:airplane: We, the rep and I were discussing games played on line and I used AH as my example and he said that yes, my game play would count towards my "data usage fee". Now how much I play, I have no idea, have never kept up with it, but I am sure Skuzzy could tell me! I check my "data usage" allowances and it says I have 300GB's free each month and I haven't even finished one complete day and it says I have used 1 GB already! That was just checking emails and etc, so I am confused about it, maybe I don't understand how it will or will not affect me, but just pis+++ me off that they can come along and charge you something without your permission.

One GB from checking emails? Either those emails had some big attachments or you have a virus.

Note that Comcast can count as a virus.

Packet information the game sends is small, but there are a lot of them. Even so I don't think you could hit 300 gig in a month if you played non-stop. Send Skuzzy a note and he should be able to give you some estimates on file size. Remember there are players who use satellite connections with charges for data and they are still playing so the data exchange cant be all that big.

As for charging you what they want, ummmm thats how people make money. It may be time to hunt around for another service provider. There is no better feeling in the world than when you get to call a big company like Comcast and tell them to stuff it!   :D

Yah I was thinking he had net usage limits in mb like my Dad's set up. He is out in the BFE though.  Earl there is no way you will hit that limit. I have a wife and 2 kids that all stream TV at the same time, plus I am downloading games constantly from steam and have never once gotten close to going over Comcast limits.

My guess is you would could use a max of 12 gig if you played 24 hours a day and 30 days.

There is no way in the world you're going to go over 300gigs in a month if all you're doing is playing Aces High and doing normal internet browsing.

By logging into your Comcast account online you should be able to check and see how much bandwidth you've been using the last several months. I check mine regularly and never come close to going over my 250 gig limit, even when downloading tons of high gig games from Steam.

Getting a new provider is easier said than done. I live in NYC, you would think that I would have my choice of TWC, Verizon, RCN, Optimum...

but NO! These companies are in control of well defined, territorial monopolies, most peeps do not have any options but 1 or none. Instead of the government forcing 1 internet hardware design that all providers must build, they divied up the landscape into little fiefdoms that they only control and only provide their hardware and infrastructure.

Because of how the internet infrastructure is so piecemeal, they got us by the balls, in a monopolistic catastrophe that is totally against the free markets! I now pay $50+/mth for DSL crap service, raised my rate without even a mention. I can get TWC 50/5 service for same price, but I already thru TWC out for erroneous billing and bad service. So now I have to go back to them or have none.

So you are correct that they can bill what they want but in a monopoly its BS.

Good luck OP on your dilemma, I feel your pain. I wonder if they charge the government for excessive use by the various security agencies.................

My internet is through verizon as it is the only option i have right now. Im limited to 70GB a month and dont have a problem playingAH. 300GB is way more than enough unless your constantly downloading movies.

Contact your state BPU (Bord of public utilities) or cable authority you will be supersized how quickly Comcast goes to there knees and begs for your favor. Threaten or make a complaint, negotiate 6 months of free service. I never call Comcast any more I just call the NJ BPU fixed overnight.

Earl if you're still seeing 1gb a day without gaming in the next couple days, download some of the programs out there that tracks all your traffic, as something is very wrong, as in I would suspect somebody is pirating your wi/fi capability.  I have 800gb max on my 250mbit cable, and unlimited on my fiber 260mbit through my Telco, and I check my usage all the time.  I have 3 home theater PCs running Netflix for a combined 8 hours a day most likely, download Steam games, play games, and whatnot every day of every week, and usually come in around 5 to 600 on the cable connex - so there is NO way you should be hitting 300 with just general doo-dad stuff online.

Something is very wrong if you are.
