Couple of Canopy Landings

Learning to slingshot myself at the ground and miss

Canopy is a 170sqft ZPexe, which in skydiving terms is a piece of crap, so I'm really happy to be getting this performance out of her. Around 270 jumps on this canopy now. Will continue to fly her till there is nothing left to learn before downsizing

cheers!

Hey Mechanic, nice number of jump you gathered such a short time :)

However... <Capt Killjoy mode on>, did you get coaching before attempting HP landings?

I never tried to swoop myself but I read and talked a lot about it in my skydiving days and I noticed a few things in your vid:

- camera doesn't show you clearing the airspace around you (and mostly behind you) before committing...
- as it is hard to look behind you, it is recommended to make 90° (or 270°) turns to be able to spot other canopies in the landing pattern. Multiple of 180° turns are not recommended because this increase the mid-air risk.
- speaking about the turns, swoop beginners are advised not to exceed 90° turns. You're already doing 360s?
- this is certainly not a incentive to downsize, but large square canopies have a much shorter recovery arc than swoop canopies, forcing you to start your turn much lower and reducing you bail-out options. Not much of a problem for 90s, but when pulling 270+....

Sorry to sound like a boring old fart (I'm almost 46 so I'm feeling somewhat entitled ;) ); and double sorry if you're getting coached by a knowledgeable swooper; but I still remember the young guy on the dropzone forums (Sangi) who wouldn't listen to swoopers with thousands of jumps while posting vids of himself making big turns before yanking barely out of the corner, downsized to a small Katana without being remotely ready for it, recovered some sense and went back to a somewhat bigger Safire but eventually smashed himself into the ground and won a wheelchair ride for the rest of his life...

Take care and have fun responsibly ;)

Cheers!

Hey man!

I'm lucky enough to be working on a dropzone right now that employs the #4 and #5 placed swoopers in Europe as instructors, plus a couple of other highly experienced swoopers. They have their beady eyes on me I can assure you and are always quick to give out free advice.

The camera clips are all taken from right before the turns. I am pretty hot on SA thanks to this game :)
Due to flying the wingsuit on these jumps everyone else is on finals before I even deploy, giving me a blissful clear sky to play in. The part i'm landing in is also a dedicated swoop lane with a minimum turn of 270 being required.

I've only racked up a total of around 400 jumps so far which is quite early to start learning hp landings. Perhaps I will pay the price but at the moment i feel confident that im not pushing beyond my abilities.

On this canopy I did around fifty 90s, one hundred 180s and about another one hundred 270s. The recovery arc is very quick, a perfect 360 will start from about 380ft, which is insane and I dont want to make a habit of doing them. So currently my setup starts around 450-500ft and then I continue to dive after the turn with the fronts. This isnt really swooping, but as shown I getting a decent run off when I get it right.

For me it's implanting the visuals into my mind and just learning the canopy in general. I plan to downsize next year and want to pick up a stiletto 150, at which point I will be right back to square one learning 90s again.

Cheers for the good advice, you dont sound old, you sound intelligent and experienced.

Hello Mechanic,

Sorry for the late reply...

Thanks for answering my concerns. I'm glad to read that you're getting good advice (and supervision) by experienced canopy pilots. In fact, every point you're making in your post shows that you're doing it the right and safe way, IMO.

I'll just comment on something you wrote:
Quote
Perhaps I will pay the price

I remember something an old skydiver told me when I began, and I've heard and read about the same saying in other activities with risk involved (motorbike riding, piloting, scuba diving, climbing...): "as soon as you begin to ask yourself should I go on with this? (the way I'm doing it now), it means that you should stop, step back, think hard about it and probably make some changes." Years later, I think it was a great advice.

(or maybe you wrote this just not to jinx yourself ;) )

Anyway, keep us posted with your vids :)

Really cool seeing you love a sport I did back in the 80's.

Anyone remember the name of the Euro pilot we used to have here that dropped meat bombs out of planes?

My lastest "Sport" is learning how to reload so that my gun range expense is cut in half.  :uhoh

I remember a dz pilot here about 8 years ago but i cant remember his name. I bet cpxxx would remember his name.
