A little Skuzzy time wanted.
« on: December 13, 2015, 10:21:38 PM »

Skuzzy, just ran this. 12/13/15 11:10 pm est

at beginning the highlighted hop 47%PL, it slowly dwindled to 0%, but after short time %PL began to rise to current high lighted level.

New TWC service installed, their Arris cable modem/router hardware. This cannot be good, how do I address this to TWC tech support?
any hints appreciated.
Internet only service.

Just send them the Ping Plot and get them to address the problem.  As it is right at your connection, the first line of defense, at RR, should be able to handle it.

In English??  Just wondering, since I had some bad warpy connection issues and did a Ping Plot and found packet loss at the first ISP hop.

My first line of defense:  Chop daughters head off for DC Universe mega download, steam game play, using the network to "move" music files, etc... etc.:old:

Second line of defense after walking away from daughter's room, head in hand, confronting wife who confirms that daughter was no where near the computer, thus pointing out, it was the "innard netz" gone bonkerz.....

3rd line of defense, attempts to re-attach daughter's head to neck.....  :headscratch:  Confirmed re-attached properly :uhoh (you can tell, because the eyes continue to roll no matter what you say or do

The first line of defense, at an ISP, is a poorly paid phone person whose job is to get you off the phone without the ISP having to do anything to solve the problem.

I've had TWC out here twice now for 1st hop packet loss . First time they replaced the modem , 2nd time the decided to change the cable from the pole . Now changing the cable from the pole requires the maintenance dept to find the time to come out and do the job. My packet loss has cleared up but i didnt see them replace the drop lol.

If you can , try hooking the modem directly to the cable line before it is split for any other devices ( tv ect) .  Some times an old splitter can cause a real issue so taking them out of the equation is the best bet.  The other thing you can do is log into your modem and see what the upstream and downstream power levels , and SNR (signal to noise ratio)  are and see if they are out of wack.

I'm confused.  Only the first hop shows any packet loss, all others (except the second to last) are 0% loss, including the AH servers.  If you have no packet loss to AH servers then what problem do you have?  If the first hop was really losing packets (instead of just not bothering to respond to the ping request) then you would get loss at the end (AH servers) as well, wouldn't you?  Don't intermediate servers sometimes decide they can't be bothered to return ping requests while still forwarding your actual data to it's destination?  Or do I fundamentally misunderstand networks?

Right? I was having issues for MONTHS of my modem losing signal many times a day for random amounts of time. Eventually when enough people called in and after they sent someone out (He didn't find anything of course, But they could see my connection dropping A LOT.) They finally replaced some infrastructure and it was magically fixed. I think it was a node, Not sure.

There was a street light that's been out for five years, They finally replaced it. I didn't even know it was here when I moved in.

Let me answer this simply.  If you see packet loss at a hop, then all bets are off after that first occurrence of packet loss.

At any second a router can drop a packet, the next second it may not drop yours, it might drop another connections packet.  It is the nature of large scale networking infrastructures.

There are a ton of articles on exactly how it all works.  Far beyond the scope of this bulletin board system.

Responding to a ping is entirely different to just passing the icmp packets on.

On enterprise/telco gear there is often a data plane (where packet routing is handled) and a control plane (where management of the device occurs).

Passing your icmp packets onto a different location occurs on the data plane.

Responding to your ping occurs on the control plane. If the control plane is under load it may not respond to pings (as this is low priority).

So TWC service is a little spotty. Tonights weather is raiseing hell all over so a high ping.

My question is tho why is the hop repeating?
notice the identical hop addy, that's my modem/router last stop before wan.

Any info or link appreciated.

That is cute.  Something is amiss with that router.  It should not be echoing back the ICMP ECHO packet twice.  Each time ping plotter sends a packet, it increments the TTL (time to live) value.  This value is what causes a packet to be sent back to the sender.

For instance, the first packet is set to have a TTL of 1.  The first router in the trace/Ping Plot decrements it to zero which then causes that packet to be returned to the sender.  Then the next packet is sent out with a TTL of 2, which allows the packet to get to the next router before being sent back.

The returning routers place their information in the packet which is being returned as part of the ICMP ECHO request.

For some reason, there are two routers identifying themselves with the same IP address.  They really do not have the same IP address on the network interface as that would cause certain death of network traffic in that chain.  It could be multiple network interfaces on the same router responding with the primary IP address of the router.  A misconfiguration, for sure.

You should report this to your ISP.

Whats strange is it only shows this with the plot to AH. Other plots do not exhibit this...................
