Call from "tech support"
« on: December 15, 2015, 12:21:32 AM »
Tonight I got a call from a heavily accented man claiming to be from "tech support". He said that for the last two days my computer has been uploading maleware to the internet. I don't believe him and hung up. I have run my malware bytes a/v and the comodo a/v both come up clean. Is it possible they could both miss a virus?

A Classic case of attempted Human Engineering.
"I need you to click start and then run and then enter mscon...  and enter ###.###.###.###"

"Yes! I see you now, Stupid rich foreigner.  :x Give me your credit card number if you want your computer back."

I like to keep them on the phone as long as possible when I have the time.

Several years ago I got a similar call from someone telling me they were with Microsoft.  It wasn't about a virus or malware but they told me there was a problem with my OS.

I hung up.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

This has been going on in Canada for a few years now.  There are a 1/2 dozen companies or more in India which are aggressively using telemarketing to scam people out of money.  One of these companies actually DID provide tech support for Microsoft at one point, which lost their contracts and began scamming.

They get people to look at various places in the Windows OS and reporting features and trick them into thinking errors/viruses are being shown.  They also call themselves "Windows Support", specifically not "Microsoft".

CBC news here has done 2 full 2 hour specials on this - they infiltrated a guy into one of the call centers in India, it was pretty interesting actually.  You HAD to sell someone on day one or you get fired, hence the very aggressive tactics and lies.  All they want is your credit card # really.

They've saturated the Canadian market, you can't speak to anyone without a home phone line without them bringing this up, I've been called over 20 times on our 2 landlines.  Lots of youtube videos of IT people screwing with them, one of them actually hacked the Indian call center back, and took control of THEIR pc, I'll find it and link it, pretty funny stuff.

Last time I said,
Microsoft ain't calling nobody out of the blue. Your a crook and a thief, then hung up.

No tech anybody is calling call you out of the blue! Sure would luv to get my hands on the company that collected my metadata and sold my number to these sums a beeches. I got a hammer just made for their fingers....................

ty NSA, you can capture/sell my metadata, but you cannot seem to stop a single terrorist. Its a brave new world.

I didn't trust this from the minute he id'd himself so I didn't get burned. The good thing is I learned a bit more about how to clean up my computer thanks to this.

If I don't know who's calling when I look at the caller ID, I don't answer.

If it's important they'll leave a message....most don't.

The timing was good today.

I was expecting a call so I picked up. I was confused when I heard "... Gutter Cleaning Service... free."

So I said, "Free? That sounds pretty good." :devil

I could almost hear his excitement but he backtracked fast, "It's an introductory offer for $99."

I'm smiling from ear to ear. "Really? That sound like a bargain!"
He starts to agree but I cut him off, "I'm in a 20,000 square foot building!"

Silence.
"I've called a business haven't I?"
By now I'm laughing pretty loudly, "It's an apartment complex."

That was for a local business. Imagine what I do to a "tech support" call.

There's plenty enough of them, otherwise they won't call. Sad but true. What's even worse, most of them are too ashamed to tell the police or other authority.

There is a real convincing one that claims to be from Microsoft. Claiming that your computer is causing problems on their servers. At the end they try to get you to pay for windows defender.
