Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Spoiler free, please.)
« on: December 17, 2015, 10:43:56 PM »
I just returned from the new film and I am still shaking from the adrenalin after seeing it.  It's everything that made the original trilogy great, only (as Lucas is famous for telling his actors on the set of the originals) "faster and more intense." Which is mostly positive. Believe the hype. "The Force Awakens" is that good.

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I'm feeling.

My first main thought was that it adhered fairly closely to the formula of the original film, but the MORE I thought about it, the more I realized that it's NOT a bad thing.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I haven't seen it yet.  I'm waiting, not for reviews, just busy.
But, I am a huge fan, have every, and I mean Every Single Book published throughout the franchise.
This film is a complete departure from the existing storyline, and I'm perfectly fine with it.  It's just that, a story.
Can't wait to see the new direction.

I'm really curious to see your reaction to this, as someone who has so much love for the Extended Universe.

I seem to be completely alone in this, but I thought it was terrible. Not just for not adhering to the EU at all, I knew that would happen, but from purely a movie standpoint, I wasn't at all fond of it. I've got a spoiler-included thread up with exact reasons.

I give it an 8 or 9 out of 10. I've noticed that I usually change my rating after I've watched a movie a time or two.

Just saw it this morning.   Wasn't perfect, but a very large improvement from the dreck of the prequels.

Overall, a good movie.   Not Empire Strikes Back , but what can ever be as cool as that?   Will go to see it again.   :aok

<sigh>
Well, it wasn't ...bad.
I think it could have been so much better.

I wish they had left out Han and Lea. Luke can pull off an old wizard, but Lea wasn't even recognizable and an old run-down bad boy Han is just sorta pathetic.

Bottom line?

I don't think J.J. Abrams did as good a reboot for Star Wars as he had done for Star Trek, but it was certainly better than the prequels.

Ironically, I suspect the next one will be better.

It's everything that made the original trilogy great

Agreed.  Liked it better than any of the others, except for the 1977 original.  Very pleasantly surprised.

Ironically, I suspect the next one will be better.

Variety today had quotes from an interview with a friend of JJ's that Abrams has said the script is SO good for the next episode that he's wishing he had singed on as director for it, not just exec producer, which everyone knows is a tiddlywinks level of involvement, almost a "here have some $ and stfu and stay out of our way" sort of position in the grand scheme of film making.

This bodes well, as the current director for Episode 8 has stated many times he knows that the comparison to Empire Strikes Back will be inevitable, and he needs to really bring it to meet expectations for what is many SW fans favorite film (Empire).

I think this current film is a good start, and that if they release a directors cut it may fix a lot of things some didn't like, as apparently Abrams cut a LOT of really good/long scenes which filled in several blanks in how the film moved along.

Another thing is that this springboards a TON of other SW films that are coming our way - there are several spin off and stand alone story SW films otw - Rogue One, and a dedicated prequel of Han Solo are already in pre production.  Woo!

In 77 it was revolutionary. Today it's just....another movie.
Avatar or Prometheus is far superior. CGI is easy, storyline however is not. What was that dark side butthole all tough at the beginning and loosing to untrained village chick in the end? Idiotic. It's a movie people, stop idolizing it.

I totally liked it.  You have a few folks out on the net trashing it and giving them hell for continuity without realizing that this first one has to bring in all the elements left open at the end of episode 6, PLUS set up for a cliffhanger and introduce new characters that you are rooting for when the next one comes out.
