Been away for 5 years or so
« on: December 29, 2015, 12:47:47 AM »
Evening gents and ladies,

Was having a convo with a buddy about some new MilSim game and briefly remember this gem from the past. Decided to look around the forums to see whats up with the community, surprisingly I recognize some of the names from my 3-4 yr time in the game, not surprised that we're still talking about Vulchers, NOE raids, and kill steals  :noid :noid :noid . Guess I wanna see where the player base is at. I remember the player base slowly dwindling for multiple reasons back in 2010ish, complaints about gameplay, outdated PCs not being able to handle the new graphics, etc.. Just wanted to see what effect all that had over the years. Going to dust off the HOTA joystick and pedals most likely for at least an one month go, miss my K4 potato launcher so much, just looking to find out any major differences so I'm not clueless to how everything is running in game compared to 5 years ago.

Numbers are down significantly. HiTech has been working hard on AH3, with much improved graphics.

With lower numbers you don't see as much squad action. It is more challenging to find fights, though there are still some good 1v1s, 2v2s, 1v2s, etc. There also seem to be more hordes, etc.

Gone are the big epic missions that randomly show up. Weekly it seemed that a dozen buff formations with 10-20 escorts would make a run for the Strats. Those days are no more. Everything seems to be waiting on AH3. I hope it works out.

Game play is as healthy as it was in 2010 minus the uber squad action. The age of squads died long ago. Sure there are a few still standing but nothing like it used to be.

There are always good fights to be had at all hours of the day you just have to know where to find them. The problem is most people tend to side on the lazy side and want someone to start a fight for them rather than starting a good fight themselves. I for one never have any problems in this department. Rarely do I find myself in situations where I am not engaged by at least 1 player per sortie!

By all means come on back and put in some stick time when you get a chance and find out for yourself. Hell on a Monday the action was great. Massive Bish Rook furbal in the middle of a bish horde. Great strategic fights as well and base takes that were still on going when I logged off at 330am my time

It's still AH.  Kind of a slimmer, trimmer version (regarding numbers) of exactly the same thing it's always been.

I just came back a few weeks ago after 4 years myself and I don't notice a huge difference.  There's a lot more Yaks in the air as they seem to have added a few new models, but that's about it.

I've had some great 1v1's against old good sticks who've been around over a decade and I've been bored out of my mind by 5k ho and go extensions by old poor sticks who've been around over a decade.  One plus to dwindling numbers is the most that have ganged me so far is 6 :)

Well heck, Vudak...let's get the rust knocked off of your abilities and 6 on you at once, will not be a problem....I remember how far you had come along and better you were before you had to take a little leave for awhile...

AH slowly, painfully dying, HiTech has been working on AH3, with much improved graphics,  I doubt that will save it.  I played in the test and was not impressed.  Game play in current form is lacking and will be the same in AH3.   I stay because my squad is still active and we play every week.

Maybe it is you  that has changed. There are still fights to be found. You have to come down and get in the middle of them for the fun. Midwar on Monday nights has started to flourish. For the last 2 weeks we have gone there from LW and had a ball just fighting. We had over 40 folks in there between 2 bases.

I didn't say there were no fights, I said that the game play has grown stale.  it's the same game of capture the flag with little or no improvements.  Unrealistic road system, Run ways that can't be destroyed or cratered.  No bridges to destroy or to protect.  no meaningful river system,    It's been 20 years.   I haven't changed, I still fly with my squad every Saturday night.   I still pay my $15.00 a month.  I haven't left.  We do missions, we fly only as a squad in LW.  So now your asking me to change and fly in another arena with unrealistic road system, run ways that can't be destroyed or cratered, no bridges to destroy or protect, no meaninful river system.

.... yes this is mainly a flight game. It only has some gvs and such. Not much in the way of anything past fighting in the air.

AH3 will have a much nicer look but it will still be more towards flight and fighting.

It definitely fills the bill for folks who like that.

Our squad does it's share of dog fighting, try fighting your way into target with a heavy 38, hit that target and record one or two kills on the way out, now that's fun.  But the decline in over all numbers would seem to me to indicate that something is lacking.  Why have a DA if everyone wants to furball in the LW and why are people so hostile to people like my squad that enjoy flying a mission, fighting our way in to hit the fighter hangers and than fighting out way out.  We are not hitting hangers in the DA, we are hitting them in the LW.  You want to furball, go to the DA, that's what it's for.

Let me give you a good bit of perspective.

The fights have slimmed down a bit as the player base has shrunk. There are still big furballs and there are still lots of fights to be had.

I've flown a P-40N all this tour and still have my hands full in the skies. Not to brag (well kinda  :D ), but I still have better stats than all of the complainers who cannot find action in the their 190D and P51Ds. Even though the off hours are a bit slow, you just have to look around and find out where the bad guys are and get a few kills. The goal is to be more aggressive and learn fighter combat better.

While the MA is still the main aspect to the game and there are big fights still to be had, the game play has slowed down a bit and that just means you have to be more aggressive to get kills.

Outside of the MA, there is a vast amount of fun to have.

The special events are a hell of a lot of fun. Better than anything I've ever seen.
1. Real combat scenarios that happened in WW2.
2. Axis V Allies in same time period of planes.
3. FSO which is incredible.
4. KOTH -to spruce up your fighter skills.
5. Racing
6. Combat challenge - the most entertaining and best furball action.

You have the AvA which is the most realistic aspect to AH with no icons and fair time zone planes. It's a lot of fun when there are a few people in there. Hopefully the arena will become more popular.

There really are a lot of fun aspects to this game that are thrilling. The MA is the main source of action but I'd highly recommend checking out many of the other events.

My advice is to jump in there, fly aggressively, and check your 6

The DA is for one on one and two on two and such. LW is for fights.

Obviously you do not know me as I fly 38j almost exclusively. CV won't let me though. LOL.

We furball while others take bases. Sometimes we may even help take a base. Mostly we may fly cap. The 80th mostly fights in our 38s though.

Any game you play can get old unless you really love what you are doing. We like to post about the historical information we dig up on the real 80th.

Hope you find what you are looking for. I mean that sincerely. 《S》
