Ki-84 47th Sentai #69
« on: December 30, 2015, 07:20:37 PM »
Flown by Taiichi Hatano in July 1945 as part of the defense of the Japanese home islands, Honshu, specifically.  Hatano was killed on July 28 when he, and five other pilots, were bounced by American fighters shortly after taking off.

Thanks.

This one was a ton of work to get right. There were many issues with this plane, most frustrating was that the upper wings are a slightly different scale than the bottoms. This insured that nothing ever lined up well wrapping over the leading edge.

Very good! <S>
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Stunning.  I am in awe.  Well done.

I have noticed that wrap misalignment phenomenon on the B Pony skin.   Can't figure out where some things come from.  In your case nobody will even notice.  What a great job.  I am sure it took a lot of time and the results show.

Not just misalignment, but watch out for areas where the size of a pixel is larger. Like the top fuselage of the D-Pony. I assume the Bravo is the same.

The B is even worse than the D on some of those things.   The top of the nose takes a straight line and turns it into an S.   LOL

When you guys do those aileron rib effects are you doing one as a master with copy/paste or do you literally draw them all one at a time, make the layers, blur, etc.?

I am going to try that for the first time on a rudder.

I tried something new on the Ki84. In studying Greebo's Ki43 and Hirricane defaults, I noticed that he mimics the stitching of the fabric over the ribs by using a row of white pixels, each white pixel separated from the next in line by a blank pixel. This row faces the light source. Beside the white pixel line is another row done in black pixels with the same spacing. The black pixels are aligned with the blank spaces in the white row. This gives both the textured and shading effects to the ribs after this layer's opacity is reduced to about 10%. Next add some faint shading to the fabric between the ribs. There are two layers at play; the stiching and the shading. Each is about 10% opacity, but keep the layers separate so you can fine tune to best suit the scheme.

Here's a pic of my Ki84 rudder showing how the effects come together:

Nice work devil!

Did the Japanese have low quality paint, or did they just never repaint after the first coat? Both?
