Kingpin, aka Ryno is the one who gave that seminar. He is one of the trainers here and Im sure will be along shortly. Vudu taped and posted the videos. Watching all 6 videos, it was the complete secession he did that night. There are great tips on how to set up conversion, why you set it up, and how to aim as well as some great practice exercises to get better.

Lone12 did you schedule training yet with anybody?

You can get the target offline or in the training arena with a dot command. ".target 300" typed into the text buffer.
.target 300 gives you a target to your north 300 yards away. .target 0 turns it off.

Go to the hanger from the tower clipboard menu to select aircraft.

You don't sign up anywhere. You just tell us when you are available to train so we can set up an appointment.

can anyone tell me how to get the target in front of my plane on the runway and how do I find out the angle of all the different planes

I suggest that you do all your gunnery testing in the air.  Just take off from any base in the plane you want to test, and type .target X where X is the distance you want the target at.

Start by setting the range to whatever your convergence is, so you can see what your "tightest" bullet pattern will be.  Then you can change the target to different distances (closer and farther away than your convergence setting), so you can see how convergence settings and ballistics (bullet drop) affect things at different ranges.

The target will automatically clear itself of bullet hits after 1000 hits.  If you want to clear the target yourself or remove the target (it will stay up once you bring it up, even in the MA) type .target 0 to remove it.  The next target you bring up will then be a "fresh" one with no bullet hits.

I ran that part of the clinic on the runway only to take the "flying" variables out of it, so everyone would see exactly the same results, simply to show what the bullet stream is doing at different ranges.  I then had players do it in the air and mentioned in the clinic that all your own testing/practice should be done in the air, as this will show results based on your own flying.  You will better learn to maneuver to the shot and, if you are still having issues after practicing for a while, it may reveal a variety of stick-handling or scaling issues as well.

I am happy to help people practice and learn gunnery in the Training Arena.  Simply post here 1) Your in-game name 2) the time(s) including time zone that you are available to meet and we'll set up a time to do so.

Knowledge and practice are both important but so is getting them in the right order.  :aok

I will add to this of my favorite quotes: "Practice doesn't make perfect.  PERFECT PRACTICE makes perfect."  (Attributed to several people including Vince Lombardi and Cal Ripken Sr.)

A big part of successful coaching is teaching or correcting a technique so that it can be practiced and repeated correctly until it becomes automatic.  Learning WHAT and HOW to practice is far more important than just "practicing".   Otherwise, players left to their own devices may repeat the wrong thing over and over until that becomes a bad habit.

This is why I say live training in person is so much more valuable than trying to learn only from videos.  Videos are good for getting information or demonstrating the "right way", but videos can't observe you doing it, see if you are doing it right, correct mistakes or improve technique before you develop a bad habit.  It's always easier to learn something the right way early on, rather than try to break a bad habit later.

Yes, that is a pitch for live training, but I think a very valid one!   :aok

There are some very good articles on SimHQ about A2A gunnery that I highly recommend reading.  I've posted a link to a condensed version of the lecture that uses AH as the sim example.

Lone,

I am on the west coast and can be free around 8:30 PM your time (EST).  I don't have anything scheduled for Thursday night.  Are you free then to meet in the Training Arena?

Lone, I had asked about this THURSDAY night, the 14th at 8:30 PM your time.  (You said Wednesday in your reply.)

Yes, I will look for you Bishop A1 in the Training Arena.  I see stats for a Lone12 in game -- that is your in-game call sign (and not just your forum name) correct?
