I had trouble reading "Ambush Alley".  Part of the book covers A-10s in the battle of Nasiriyah.  For all its weaponry and huge cannon, the A-10 lacks on crucial thing- the optics to tell friendly vehicles from enemy vehicles.  A-10s ripped apart fully loaded Marine AAVs with cannon fire and maverick missiles. 

The A-10 has been in a LOT of friendly fire incidents.  The F-14 was used for CAS in the Serbian Air War, and was far superior at identify friendly and hostile targets due to its 'sniper' pod and superior optics.

There were also 2 people in the 14... I don't think it's all about the optics.  Friendly fire happens... if 14's had dropped enough bombs, they'd have had their share.

Action taken in 98/99.  Look up the book "Black Aces High" on Amazon.  It follows an F-14 squadron during that war.  Well worth reading.  I had no idea that we attacked a base full of Migs, or that several F-14s flew into a "SAMbush".  Real down in the dirt kind of stuff.

I thought NATO did not have troops on the ground. Who were the F14 supporting?

Avoiding friendly fire in CAS does not rely on visual identification. That is nearly impossible.

The F-14s would act as the FACs, and call in F/A-18s.  The 18s, with their poor range and loiter time did not have time to stay in the target area.  The F-14s could and did visually identify the targets.  In fact, the video from the sniper, lantern, and flir was later reviewed. 

The book is written by an Air Force officer, let me once again highly recommend it.  It explains the workings much better than I could.
