49th Fighter Group MEGA Mission for February 26th, 2016

The 49th Fighter Group will be hosting another MEGA Mission that will appeal to many more players because we will not be using “Perk Birds” like the B-29’s we used in the last mission.  The 49th will do the next mission with Lancaster’s.  Knowing the Avro Lancaster defensive guns are lacking, we are adding the B-17 YB40 Gunship to the mission to add some defensive firepower.  This will be done using B-17s with a 4K bomb load and an RAF skin.
Details about the mission will be forthcoming; it is still in the planning stages.  Those who were on the last mission will tell you a lot of planning went into that mission…….and it will go into this mission as well. Players wishing to be added to the mission and receive the orders plus any updates need to send an email to the49thfg@gmail.com please include your Aces High Game ID in the email.

Just a friendly tip to anyone considering flying the gunships

Fly 17's 25-50% fuel and defend bases under attack or even into furballs. Your not going to survive most of the time especially if your graphics card lacks but it will sharpen your gunnery skills a lot between now and the mission. Obviously your score will take a hit but if your playing for score you shouldn't need the practice.

I like the idea but didn't that extra weight come from armor and firepower that the 17G does not posses?

If im not mistaken the YB40 was used because escort fighters couldnt make the full trip and the 17F's didnt have the firepower to counter the Luftwaffe's deadly head on attacks aimed at killing the pilots. The idea was to throw up a wall of lead which had mixed results.

In this case the mission wont be historically accurate from the start but thats not the point. With all of the variables and options in this game you cant expect the opposing side to be "historically" accurate and I dont see the 17's holding their ords on this run. It will effect the climb rate as it should!

I do wish this game had YB40's though.That would be horrific lol

The bomb load would simulate that weight.  The main reason why the YB40 was a failure was that it was too heavy and couldn't keep up with the regular bombers after the bombs were dropped.

Since we can't substitute our extra armor and guns, W'll just substitute it with bombs. Lots of bombs.

     The B-17s which will be used in the mission are there to act as gunships for the mission.  They may carry bombs, they may not.  I would like them to be in the Lancaster RAF looking skin so that it may be harder to tell Lanc from Fortress.  I know this sounds dumb considering the red icon and all, but it has seemed to be a somewhat effective approach in the past. 
     As far as accurate weights for guns and armor in a YB-40 are concerned, I'm not concerned at all.  I'm about as concerned with that as I am that the Bish & Knits will launch only German aircraft against us.  As realistic as possibly means just that.  There are only a few things that players can control in the MA and making sure everyone is being realistic, not shading, and not greifing are not some of them!
     I can ONLY ask that if you wish to participate you bring what the mission calls for, or if you wish to intercept that you do it in such a way as to bring an appropriate aircraft and give us a chance to get to 10K.  Everyone reading this knows that there is at least one troll salamander who will intentionally do the opposite of what is asked; so there ya go.
     The B-17s are there to act as gunship protection for the under gunned Lancs.  They may also drop some bombs.  "Why would they drop bombs and act like a B-17?" you ask, same reason they are not armored and heavily gunned, because they are not YB-40s.  Because they may need to drop some ords.  Because I cannot guarantee that they will be intercepted by three times the actual war production outputs of the Me-262 & Me-163.
     I hope this will squash the YB-40 questions in this thread.  If you would like the mission to be more realistic, please join me in lobbying HTC to add the YB-40 to the game.

Good luck with the "wait till we're at 10K" and "bring an appropriate aircraft" portion. You can't expect people in the main arena to conform to your mission standards before they attack you.
