Serious setback.
« on: February 04, 2016, 08:28:01 PM »
Well, my PC hard drive bit the big one and it seems like I lost all of my skinning work from the last 3 years. I'll be skinning again once I get a new machine, but everything will have to be done again from scratch.

This sucks.  :bhead

Damn,  that's a bummer. Been there before.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I'm sorry, man.  That is a huge loss.

But, before you trash it - can you contact someone about data recovery from a bad hard drive?

Maybe it's possible to get some of the data off it.  3 yrs is too much work to give up without a fight, especially YOUR work!

Good Luck, Devil.

This.

Another suggestion going forward.    Get a Gmail account and email your skins to yourself when you complete them.

That's what I am doing in addition to running dual HDD.

That's really bad news Devil, I feel for you. As Oboe says it may be worth seeing if you can get a recovery firm to rescue the data.

I back up all my skinning files to an external HDD every day and at least one of each template to Dropbox, so I still have something for each ride even if my PC gets stolen.

Those 1TB external USB HD's are a life saver.  I also keep a copy on two different drives of my file server (not Raid, just a copy).

I really like the dropbox idea for templates.

Same thing as GMAIL.   Whichever works for you.   I don't know how much free space you get with DropBox...

I email my skins to myself.   This also has the advantage of being able to download them from anywhere if I need.

I sure hope you can recover your files, man.   Don't give up just yet.

You get 2 GB free with Dropbox and I have 63 sets of skin template files there taking up 1.9 GB. I just upload the Paintshop Pro files and text files, no need to waste space saving the bmps.

Hahah so when you run out of space use a Gmail account to make a new Dropbox account.  Hahaha!

...two separate copies (pre encrypted) on Amazon S3 buckets in multiple regions, etc...

Second the motion on having someone look at the drive.  I've gotten data off by all kinds of means, including taking them apart in the past (servo wouldn't spin up, but you could mechanically agitate it to life long enough to get data).
