labeled town gngs
« on: February 11, 2016, 01:26:58 PM »
Once I had my newly built box on line I restored from by b/u disc
Once I made sure all was there I noticed a town map on my desktop!
Opened it and found I had apparently at (some point) modified the existing
town map with the gng designations...ie gng00b, gng00c, etc.
It occured to me this might be helpful when reporting the condition of
a town. Anyone interested in a copy?

We all know that the guns are numbered in hexadecimal, right? A legacy of decades of 'coading,' i presume.

Apparently, small fields have 10 (hex = A) numbered guns (gngs,) medium have 13 (hex = D) and large have 23 (hex = 17.) So, the town guns start with B, E, and 18 (S,M and L.)

While not showing the locations, guns in town can be checked with the downtime dot command, and counting the eight highest numbers in sequence. I always forget how many guns are on each field, but it is an accurate check.

Hexadecimal is not a legacy... it is a shorthand method for coding
in binary  :bolt:

Add 1 to all your totals and you are spot on. (I think you forgot to count gng0.)  Small fields have 11 auto acks.  Medium have 14.  Large have 24.  All towns have 8 gng.  Ports have 8 gng and V-bases have 6 gng.

Because auto ack on the field and in the town both use "gng", it is important to know which gng are town guns if you are trying to determine if town is "deacked".  This is what the "Gunpit Numbers" show for different sized fields on Jinx's map.

Of course the downtime (.dt) code "gng" refers only to auto ack.  The .dt code for manned ack is "bas" and shore battery guns are "bah" -- important to know for taking Ports, V-bases and fields where the maproom is on the field or the shore battery can interfere with troops.

Hope this information is helpful!

Yes. 010, 012, 00B, 00E, 01A, etc.

I've also modified it to show the guns in order as they come up in the .dt command.
