I got a question about wifi and network hardware.

So I just went from dsl to cable. TWC charges $5/mth to use their modems wi-fi transmitter/receiver around the house. I want to dump that charge.
When I was using the dsl modem, I used its wi-fi ability and used an older router with it as a port breakout for other devices. These modems are port limited.

I want to use the wi-fi ability of the old DSL modems with the TWC cable modem, and then turn off the TWC wi-fi service. I just need to .............?
Any one got any expertise along these lines.

I realize I could put the modems in bridge mode but then I would lose the modems wi-fi abilities. I'm think'in putting the TWC modem in bridge mode and then using the router as a router. Its a good router with 8 ports, then using 1 of those ports to get DSL modem involved, going from device port to device port. Using the DSL modems Wi-Fi hardware and getting its signal to a TWC modem device port, 2.4GHz.

My pc and AH are thru a wired arrangement, I just want the wifi for my smartphone when home.

just buy your own modem and return the cable one. Setup the new one with cable and your done with no "rental" charge.

You lose wi-fi when bridging modems????

My bridge setup works really well.......Id say just do some more research.....

It should be easy.  Plug the WLAN port of your wifi router into the network port on your cable modem, then configure your wifi router.

If you're trying to use the wifi from an old DSL modem/router in conjunction with your cable modem, then good luck, you're on your own pretty much since you're going to have to try to figure out if its locked down and trick it into working.  802.11ac is in my experience so much better than previous standards, you might just consider buying a new fast wifi router anyhow, with 802.11ac and 1gbps network switch.

If your dsl gateway doesnt have anything gigabit rated on it, you are better off buying a new wifi router.

Not a wi fi router. Its a dsl modem that has 2.4GHz wi fi hardware. I just want to use the wi fi radio of the dsl modem and then attach it to an internet wired port in my twc cable modem, then disable the wifi hardware in the cable modem.

That wouldn't be as easy a task as plugging in a wifi router. Some dsl modems can be set up for that, some can't. Some can even be reprogrammed for advanced flexibility and safety. After all, they mostly have some sort of Linux for the configuration utility. Good luck!

Assuming you have the password to the old modem and can configure it:  turn off dhcp server on old modem.  Connect LAN port old modem to LAN port cable modem. (Use crossover cable if switches don't autodetect polarity)

I removed my suggestion as you want a system duct taped together. Not the best way if you are wanting a great connection.

Yeah, what you are attempting to do is way more of a damn headache/potential headache than just paying the rental fee or buying your own stuff. The buying your own route pays itself off pretty quickly.

ja man, but what I get is my smartphone unable to obtain an ip address.....

My phone can find the wifi signal and wants to connect except no ip assigned. The TWC cable modem is quite finicky, not as easy to play with settings, 1 minute I had my old router playing nice as a switch, next its not.

Didn't duct tape get Apollo 13 home? I'll keep playing, who knows........................ .....

with charter cable i can use my own modem and wifi router.  It hides in the basement. With a ruku wifi tv i have cable by way of the charter app..  With this set up i have no rental fees minus one tv box. and i can plug a tv in anywhere around the house.  :aok

MADe, it might be easier for others to help , if you would post the brand and model number of the DSL modem and the new TWC modem you have......

I went through something similar when I upgraded my TWC for that 100whatever DL deal and they sent me a modem/router combo, which I just turned off the router portion, and used my already installed router/network/4 & 8 switch gigabit boxes through out the house... it took me a little research, but I managed to make it work

If the modem is connected to the cable network and in bridge mode then you would need your ISP to supply you with a range of IP addresses to support more than one internal client.
