4K Monitor

I am wanting to build a new High End Desktop with  a GTX 980 Ti card. Looking at purchasing a 4k monitor but will I be able to get 4k in the Aces High game? Can I do that?  I am using a 24" 1080 x 1920 currently but would like to have a higher resolution. Will the 4k make the planes sharper? My eyesight is bad so I need it to look clear. Thx.

Aces High supports any resolution your system uses. And yes, 4k will most likely make the planes sharper. Depending on the Field Of View, 4K would allow to use more pixels for drawing a distant dot.

Just be aware than even a 980Ti video card can struggle with 4K resolutions.

980ti or 980 SLI on any of my systems with my 4k Acer 28" Gsync, if I run the game at 4k (Beta especially I'm talking here), FPS can drop into the 40s easily- even at 1440p or 1080p with everything maxed in heavy areas, it can drop into the 50s at times when low over tank town/example with cons around.  Also be aware that at 4k the planes/targets get much smaller - while looking great, you might find hitting things becomes harder until you get accustomed to the higher res.

Sure looks great though, the models/terrain in beta is something I'm just starting to appreciate - going to be some really "wow" screen shots and films coming out.

Also - I would recommend waiting a couple more months, nVidia's new 1080 cards will be out by then, plus another couple months after that the new HBM memory GPUs from both AMD and nVidia will be out, and they'll likely smoke the 980ti - also the price of the 980ti will drop very soon due to the new cards coming out.  If patience isn't a virtue like me, nothing wrong with getting a 980ti now, just be aware that it's near the end of the cycle, and it'll not be 'top dog" for more than another couple months (May/June is the latest from nVidia for 1080 release).  Also, Kaby lake (Skylake + pretty much) and Broadwell E CPUs will be out roughly this late spring/summer too - so if you want the latest, waiting for another couple/few months wouldn't be a bad decision.  There will also be a lot more info from players here about how 4k/etc is working with the new version by then.

My biggest problem with playing is I can't see the planes well the way I like to play at 145 for field of view on a 1920 x 1080 monitor. The 4k monitors are 28 inch which seems to big but at higher resolution maybe will be easier to see the planes and I will get used to it eventually.

I just read a review about two 27" better quality monitors. One was 4k, the other 2560 x 1440. They said that in monitors of that size you really can't tell a single pixel on either. Another issue against 4K is that although Windows can be scaled to show text in readable size, some programs can't! You wouldn't like to read the menus of some programs with a magnifying glass, would you?

I'm not against 4K per se, but the benefit of it shows only on much larger monitors than what we've got used to. Remember, 4K is exactly like having 4 regular FullHD monitors, both by pixel count and the load on your video card. Thus, if your current monitor is a 22" one, a 4K should be 44" for the same image quality an a little less for a sharper image.

It depends on what your really looking for. 4K will give you crisp pictures. A larger monitor gives you bigger pixels. I use a 39 inch 1080p TV as my monitor. When Im 300-400 out off a target the plane is about an inch or two across and pretty easy to see for these old eyes.

If you use a FOV of 145 on a single monitor the best way to see the aircraft is to zoom in. Use a convenient button to toggle zoom on and off to balance looking around with seeing the aircraft better. Personally I wouldn't use more than 120 for a single monitor and even then I'd use zoom.

I suspect even the new "X80" cards will require an SLI connection to maintain 60fps in AHIII. I use two GTX 980s in SLI and I must overclock in order to hold 60fps in all conditions and that's without environment updates at full. A single "X80" should be capable of running 4k with 4k textures since the cards will have 8GB of VRAM (GDDR5/GDDR5X) and no HBM yet. Some specs have been released and even though there is still an embargo in place there are some benchmarks showing up out of India on the more popular sites from time to time. This would indicate that there may also be 6GB cards coming along with 16GB cards (perhaps Titan X80).

I would rather not speculate, but I will recommend (in agreement with Gman) that anyone wanting to upgrade wait until the new cards are in play. At the very least you may benefit from the current cards dropping in price, though you shouldn't count on it. There will always be people that scarf up the remaining stock and increase the price because the alternative will be a more expensive card.

I ended up ordering this monitor after reading reviews. 2k seemed like a better choice. This one has crosshairs u can add via its programming seemed kinda neat if it works.

Good monitor, just be aware that it is a Freesync unit, NOT Gsync, so you'll probably want to focus on getting AMD video cards to take advantage of that Freesync technology, as nVidia cards don't support it - yet.  Rumor has it that all nvidia needs to do is some driver support and they could make their cards support Freesync AND Gsync, but since Gsync is their proprietary technology, I wouldn't expect it to happen, although there have been umpteen rumors it might.

DOesn't matter anyway IMO, as there are great AMD cards out now, and more coming, which work with Freesync just great - plus the Freesync monitors are cheaper than the Gsync counterpart.

That's a good monitor, a squadmate uses that very one, as well as another guy I fly with.  I have 2 of the Gsync Asus ROG and have been happy with both of them.

Thx for reply. I had a hard time deciding. Ordered yesterday for 470.00 at Newegg but seems price went up 100.00 since then. I like the IPS displays because I do Drawing and Rendering other than that I would have went with an TN with a faster response. I have a GTX 880m on my Laptop now but am leaning towards building a desktop system with an R9 390x soon to take advantage of the Freesync and 144 hz. I am limited to an HDMI 1.4 cable setup for now. Don't have a Display Port connection.

Got the Monitor in today. Had some serious bleed at top of screen with a white line about 4 inches long. Called Asus but was no help after 20 min. on phone so I gave up. Was gonna send back because I figured the display got damaged during shipping. I decided to tap on it to see if I could reposition it and it snapped back internally into place now it looks great. Line and bleed are gone.
Color and 2k resolution looks great even at 60 hz. 27" looks better than my old 22" monitor but have to get used to it feels like I'm already zoomed in before using zoom lol
