DVI vs HDMI
« on: April 04, 2016, 02:13:14 PM »
I have ans ASUS PA_248 Pro ART monitor and an AMD Radeon HD 6950 video card. I have a choice of DVI or HDMI connection. I have a Creative soundblaster sound card and 5.1 speaker system so I don't need the HDMI for audio.

I'm currently using the HDMI connection. For AH3 would it be better to use the DVI connection or will it make no difference?

I see in my  DxDiag (attached) that I have HDMI high def audio as well as the Creative SB X-Fi. Should I disable the HDMI High Def?

I'm trying to do everything I can to maximize my FPS in AH3.

I appreciate all the help I've been getting.

Basically there shouldn't be any other difference than the sound. You might feel safer, though, by using the DVI. That would be the fool proof way that your system would never ever try to push audio through.

And yes, uninstall the HDMI High Def audio drivers and disable it in Device Manager.

I'm curious. Why do the drivers need to be uninstalled as well as the device disabled in device manager?
Also, in device manager I noted I also have Intel (R) Display Audio which is disabled but the drivers have not been removed.

The HDMI sound driver is only to be used if you are expecting audio through the HDMI connector.

You want to remove that driver and disable it in the system manager if you are not expecting sound through the HDMI connector as it takes overhead for every sound and it can also cause stability problems with a computer if it is not being used, but resident.

Oh, and DVI is HDMI without the audio signals.

I can't seem to get rid of these! I uninstalled Hi Def sound drivers in control panel. I then went to device manager and found that I had 2 HDMI hidef audio devices and Intel display audio. I disabled all 3 and uninstalled the drivers in device manager.  A few minutes later while I was about to log into AH3 the dialog box saying new hardware was being installed. I clicked details and it was the 2 hidef audio devices and the Intel audio. I checked device manager and they were back, enabled, and working properly. How do I get rid of them and keep them from returning?

sounds like you got your "Install New Device(s) found drivers" set to automatic??? I think I typed the right name for it, I would uncheck that, and always do it manually

please correct me if I am wrong

hope this helps

Are you 100% positive you disabled the devices instead of uninstalling them? They should remain visible with a small circled downward arrow showing they're disabled.

Did you reboot the computer after you disabled them?

They were disabled first and showed the circle with the arrow. Then I uninstalled the drivers. Since they reinstalled I have them disabled and they and show the circle with downward arrow.

Nope. Didn't know I had to. Is it necessary to uninstall the drivers if the devices are disabled? I appreciate the help and advice; just like to understand what I'm doing.

It is a good idea to remove the drivers as there could always be unintended consequences from leaving them installed even when they are disabled.

Yes, remove the drivers, disable the devices, then reboot.  That should stop Windows from trying to re-install the drivers.  If Windows tries to install them again, then something got missed along the way.

It's more important to have them disabled. Uninstalling the drivers will tidy up your computer and make it a (just a) little faster. Windows goes through all of your drivers at boot, trying to find the corresponding devices. As you can figure, each driver takes a nanosecond or two to get sorted out.

:salute Skuzzy, once again your fingers were faster than mine. Or you didn't have to check your idioms...

This is beginning to remind me of a song we sang at camp when I was a scoutmaster called "The Cat Came Back". The devices came back and I did reboot (Actually shut down and then started again later). So what did I miss. Here's what I did:
1) opened device manager in control panel
2) Double clicked on Hi Def Audio Device
3) selected the driver tab
4) clicked disable
5) clicked yes when asked if I really wanted to disable it
6) Clicked uninstall
7) clicked OK in the warning that this would remove the device.
8) Repeated the same steps for Intel Display Audio
9) Observed that they were no longer listed in device manger
10) closed device manager and control panel an immediately shut down computer

About 2 hrs later I restarted the computer and checked device manager. The cat came back! They were both there and enabled.
