Refreshing Real News about Pascal
« on: April 06, 2016, 05:16:21 AM »
This time on Anandtech, which I think we can all agree is more reputable than these recent rumor sites.

I hope those memory bandwidth figures are correct!

Well they released Quantum Break and if you had preordered you would be getting the PC version along with your Xbox game. Unfortunately, what this reveals is that all DirectX 12/UPW titles currently have multi-GPU configurations broken, so even if Pascal were out today only one GPU would work with the latest DX12 titles.

Disappointed by Microsoft yet again.

I hope they get it fixed. I am really looking forward to running four dual-GPU cards when they are released.

Even the "worst rumor" site posted that identical info, so it's likely pretty close if not correct.  May is what nVidia has said for new cards to be released, without specifically saying which ones or what names.  So it won't be long now.  And yes, Microsoft is teh disappoint.  It's the floating point of disappoint.

We're expecting the VCA rendering systems to climb from $50k up to $130k (manufacturers SRP), and that is a good indicator that the price per card will not be greatly above that which we have now, but still higher and potentially 1-1/2 times higher. So, I don't expect a great deal of early adopters. Still too early to be sure though.

What is obvious? You will need bigger PSUs.

EDIT: One site estimated 3800W for 8 GPUs, so . . .

I love reading comments where people jump to conclusions almost creating a panic, but not quite ("You mean Pascal won't be a gaming platform?"). It's easy to see how UFO stories get started.

I know right, it's like they missed the forest for the trees or something.  Yes Pascal tech CAN do other things, but it's still GPU tech at it's corps, and it going to be powering...GPUs obviously.

I hope we get some sort of new cards by summer, I've been waiting a long, long time to finally upgrade these 980s, I'll probably replace the Titan and 980ti if it's worth it too, but it feels like forever this cycle around.

I have been patiently waiting for the new series cards,my war chest is 3/4 full so another month or 2 will give me time to fill the chest!

Personally I would like to have a single card,I would like to be able to run 4k at more than 60FPS on that card,ya I know a man can dream cant he.

Please keep us advised as I look to the more tech guys for my guidance, and for the most part you've never steared me wrong! :aok

I thought this generation (14 nm) was supposed to be lower power?

The processor is twice the density, which reduces the power consumption. If they had left it there then the power requirement would have been reduced. The processors are larger, so they will use more energy overall.

Polaris/AMD intel is coming out slowly now too, "rumor" is a May/June release for the R9 490 and 490x, but that isn't HBM stuff yet, but at least there will be options out there, and at least AMD has gotten serious about competing again- and they are.

As soon as Broadwell E would hurry up and release, this could be a fun summer for upgrading.

I'm not happy with the EVGA offerings in the X99 area, so to ensure compatibility and overall fewer problems I am going to change to ASUS for Broadwell-E. That is, unless some major changes take place.

Based on the latest news that the big "reveal" will not be until the last days of May at the earliest I don't expect to see cards available, mainstream, until September or even as late as November. So, anyone waiting on a new card might want to ask themselves how happy they are with what they have already. It doesn't look like the new cards will be out soon at all; not in any real numbers at least.
