I remember watching that "contest", thinking there is no way they'll let McBoatface win, even though it was the clear winner.  They chose the 5th name down the list - why even have a contest if you are just going to pick whomever you wish anyhow...

They did name the ROV submersible Boaty McBoatface as a lame olive branch.  Lame.

The boat did look like a McBoatface.

This sort of open choice competition is asking for trouble really. They should have asked for name suggestions first, then let everyone vote for the winner from the best ten.

Purely for the media attention it could have garnered, and the donations, funding, and continuing PR over the course of it's life, I would think "Boaty McBoatface" would actually have worked out well for them in the long run...

Truthfully? What's wrong with it? It's not a freaking cartoon, first of all. I'm sure it wasn't in the spirit that the contest was intended, and the name was probably done as a smart alec joke. I mean come on, are we 12 years old?
