I drive an 18 wheeler long haul (48 states). They have been placing these forward looking radars in the trucks for years, and they suck. The darn thing will lock onto bridge overpasses, signs and such and slam on the brakes. Never once has the system helped me. Imo, it is absolutely dangerous, esp in snow and ice. The only thing that I do like about it is if my truck is governed just a hair faster than the one in front of me, it will lock on and match that speed with a following distance I am comfortable with. It's better than taking 10 miles to pass the other truck.
I need stuff that helps me stay safe. I like the side scan radar that alerts me when someone is in my blind spot.
I do not need help driving the semi or keeping it in the center of the lane. All these bells and whistles are a major distraction and drive you nuts. The last radar I had would actually blind you at night, so I had to keep cardboard taped over the display.
It's a bunch of stupid crap the REAL pros DO NOT NEED!! However, the companies get a nice insurance break by equipping the trucks with this junk.
