I met Gordie Howe on my way to the PeeWee Quebec Tournament back in 2006. Our team was at customs in the Montreal Airport, snaking back and forth through an enormous line. Each "lap" we would pass the same people and it was around the 3rd one that we noticed Gordie was just ahead of us. My Dad struck up a conversation with him briefly each time we passed and around the second time he asked me (around 11 at the time), "You're a left-handed centerman, aren't you?" He was dead-on, and it was a simple moment I'll never forget. He proceeded to give me one of the signed cards he carried around and even gave me a trademark elbow and jab to let me know he was still Mr. Hockey. He was so genuine and down to earth, it was truly an honor to meet the best of all time. RIP Mr. Hockey

I grew up in suburban Detroit too young to see him play (technically wrong, but practically correct, due to his extended career), but I do remember him mixing paint with a hockey stick on TV in local home improvement store advertisements.

A massively legendary figure in Hockeytown, right there with Lewis, Cobb, Kaline, Sanders, etc. And realistically he's ahead of all of them, in what he achieved. The only problem being that nationally (in the USA) hockey isn't as popular of a sport as the others, and so appears on TV less prominently.  In Detroit he'll go on to have a Babe Ruth - like status... someone who decades later even those far too young to have seen him play or even met him, will have heard the name spoken in revered tones.

When Cleveland had a professional Hockey team, the Crusaders I attended a game to watch Mr. Howe skate with his sons.  The team he was on as I

remember were the Houston Aeros.  Even at this stage in his career he was the smoothest skater on ice I ever saw.

We shall miss him.

I grew up watching him play he was the greatest ever to lay blades on the ice, 32 seasons The man was phenomenal, he will be truly missed.

Grew up hearing my father rave about him.  Also, Mike Babcock stocked shelves for one of my family's companies during his WHL coaching years while I was in high school (I was his manager in my last high school year at a service station, he obviously went on to bigger things than coaching WHL hockey and working odd jobs in the off season back in the early 90s), and is a good family friend still, and would have us down to Detroit yearly to watch a game or two when he coached the wings.  Seeing the Howe memorabilia was always interesting there.

Speaking of the GH Hat trick, I saw Jarome Iginla get a couple in his years in Calgary, and saw him get a "double" GH hat trick once, where the guy he fought got a GH hat trick in the same game as well - it's happened only twice in NHL history. 

Technically speaking, many say the Gordie Howe hat trick should be a goal, an assist, and an elbow or cross check in the face, not a fight, but I'm happy with the "regular" way too...
