Can't afford the Vive or Rift VR headsets?
« on: June 14, 2016, 02:21:33 PM »
Saw this at E3, a VR headset with the same specs as the Rift and Vive but at lesser price point. It will also be compatible with any game or program that uses SteamVR (Vive games) or OpenVR.  Since Vive support is being added to AH3 (via SteamVR), the OSVR headset will also work.  The only thing is that it doesn't come with controllers.

OSVR

Any idea of how the screen door effect is with these AckAck?  For guys that just want a VR headset for a couple flight sim games (me), this would be perfect.

The set I checked out this morning had the same image quality as the Rift.

I see that Razer is a part of this...

That $400 price puts this one almost within reach and if giving the same experience as the other two it would be worth saving for.

Can't say I understood how their buy back for developers might work. Sounded almost like they expect a developer to sell their soul.
Easy in-game again.

Hah, I was hoping you looked through it.  I'm in, for sure.  If it's as good as the Vive, I'll sell the Vive we have coming, as I don't really care about the stand up stationary shooting goofy games, I just want it for AH3 and DCS.  The guys using Vive for DCS are raving about it over there, I'd say it's slightly in the Vive's corner between the Rift and the Vive over there.

Thanks AckAck - that's a pretty good piece of intel for everyone here - same with other flight sims/sit down games.  Arma3 would be a blast with these things I'd bet.  I know that higher tier special operations units have trained in hostage rescue using VR headsets for years now, over a decade in fact.  Imagine being able to recreate that online in your house...

I see while ordering one that they have a developer program, and will send a unit out if game developers apply - AckAck, you should let HT know about this thing, all the work being put into the Vive here, if this thing is compatible, it'll make that work worth it IMO, as for 300$ USD for the base unit, that puts in in range of a whooole lot of players here I bet.  Further research today shows there is a slew of controllers like the Vive controllers type deals on the way from many manufacturers - again, HT has said how slick these are for controllers, that could open up AH3 to not just Vive owners, but now buyers of this cheaper unit, and a 50 or 100$ aftermarket set of controllers.

Looks like the -1 is DK2 quality-ish and the -2 is CV1 comparable?

gman, the military training headsets are emagin Z800s generally. I used to use one of those with AH a few years back ;) List price was us$1800, got mine for ~ half that when they had them on special.

How good is 3D on something like Rif/Vive.

I've tried 3D on my phone and it seemed pretty meh. I'm sure the low FPS had a lot to do with it.

From the comments of the designers and presenter, what was demonstrated was what is going to be the consumer version and had the update to deal with the screen door effect and was running Razer's latest HDK2 software.

Impressed so far:

I might go for one when I have some spare dosh. Oculus has me worried with their walled garden/apple type approach to software.
