Glad to see your having a blast in Arma, Odd! I haven't had a chance to load it up onto one of our servers, due to working on a update for one of our current missions. I'm still looking forward to trying it out!
Hi Delta,
It can be very unforgiving at times, so be prepared for a steep learning curve as you
begin it. I'm personally finding it akin to learning how to play chess without someone
to teach you.
The campaign part of it has proven to be somewhat frustrating, though it has provided us
with some adrenaline-inducing action.
Yesterday, three of us were on the server. We held only our "HQ", which consists of
the arsenal (unlocked items in unlimited supply), the inventory (captured gear and
weaponry), and our AI "Captain", who assigns us various "missions".
We'd decided to move on an AAF (the bad guys) base. This entailed taking
out a couple of roadblocks enroute and then setting up into overwatch positions
looking into the base itself.
As we're still playing around with and learning the "NATO options", we decided an
air assault on the base might prove fun to watch. And indeed it was!
"Spending" fully half of our total "Nato points", we watched three or four
Nato troop-carrying helicopters, covered by an attack helo, rappel into the areas
surrounding the base and then start fighting their way into the base itself.
There was some horrific fighting going on between the AI troops and aircraft,
which we initially watched, then participated in directly. We finally managed to
take the base, then easily took the power station North of it. (don't shoot the
civilians, you'll lose "nato points".)
We also managed to repair three downed enemy helicopters (engineers and
took kits required) and... well...the gunship helo augered attempting to land
at HQ (where it would have become fully repaired), another was shot down by
an AAF fighter, and the third became irretrieveable when our glorious base
was subjected to the last of three "counterattacks" and our fuel truck
(all damaged/captured helos require refueling for some reason) was blown
to hell, along with the two guys attempting the retrieval.
We shrugged off the loss of the base, and began pouting over it like
10 year olds, but then decided we'd go attack some enemy outposts and
get our inventory back up to acceptable levels. (We'd used up all our AA
launchers and rockets during our initial attack and attempting to repel
the AAF air-based counterattacks.
What we -didn't- do was assign a few AI troops to guard our HQ.
A sniper got to within range of our AI Captain and took him out.
This forces the re-establishment of a HQ elsewhere on the map, and
pretty much completely takes away the vast majority of the gear
in the inventory crate (captured weaponry). We did however get to
keep our "unlocked" stuff.
So... we're back at square one in the main. D'oh!
Ah, the best laid plans of mice and men. Heheehehe!
Best, Odd
