PC Maintence Utilities
« on: August 16, 2016, 03:14:56 PM »
I'll have to confess that I'm not the most knowledgeable or diligent person when it comes to the routine tasks required to keep my computers in the best operating state. I would love to have a "magic bullet" program that fixes everything. I know there are software packages out there that claim to do just that but I tend to be leery of the claims.  I have friend who uses Iolo System Mechanic and swears by it (But he's not sat all computer savvy). It seems to have good reviews on the internet but I don't know how much faith to put in them. It is a PC magazine editor's choice but I don't know how much confidence to place in that.

Have any of you had experience with this or similar software packages?

Thanks

I recommend using Glary's Utility.

The only outside system utilities that I use are O&O Defrag, and Hitman Pro. I occasionally use Driver Cleaner, or Display Driver Uninstall.

Condor, you are an intelligent individual that can research any problem your PC has and deal with them as they come along. You can also use the Windows Reset function and take Windows back to its original configuration (W10 feature). Registry cleaners are nearly all utilities that can make matters worse in a hurry.

EDIT: And Macrium Reflect (free) for cloning and backup/restore.

The free CCleaner is what I have in my toolbox. It has a solid reputation of not breaking things. The main tool I use is the Cleaner, which I like because it wipes off all third party temporary files in one sweep. The Tools/Startup tool is also quite handy, it allows for preventing programs to start automatically. Normally I'd do that via the Settings of each programs, but some don't feature that option. It also allows for permanently deleting leftover startup entries of uninstalled programs.

The Windows Cleanup Utility also has great potential, especially in cleaning Windows Update. For the hidden features, read here: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/automate-disk-cleanup-utility-windows

Glary and Iolo have too much drama and hype in their behavior to my liking. Not to mention them annoyingly advertising and installing their other products.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

glary's was caught stealing virus definitions a few years ago. their "free" program is always pushing you towards their paying program.  at least that's how it was when I got it years ago.
