Transfering Programs To A New Box
« on: September 27, 2016, 01:31:37 PM »
99.9% of my stuff can be easily transferred but I have one program that I desperately need and can't afford to be without that I need to move over to a new system because mine is about to die and I don't have the installer.  Any ideas gents?  Skuzzy?

Moving from Windows 7 to 10 (not thrilled about going to 10 by the way).  12 g ram 1 tb of hd space to 12 g ram 2 tb of hd space.  More details available if necessary.

It depends on the application.  If there are no dependencies in the registry, then it should be pretty straight forward.

If it is something from Intuit, you can give up now.

The installers are usually not too hard to find, the license codes may be trickier. For those I've found the Belarc Advisor quite handy: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html. It's not the only one capable to find lost license codes, the code finding capabilities also vary between programs.

There's some software that claim to transfer programs. One of them is http://www.easeus.com/free-pc-transfer-software/ which might do the trick. However, if possible, a fresh install is always a safer bet.

It's not Intuit but it's a proprietary program.  Cad, PS, and all of that other stuff no big on this end.  PITA but nothing I can't deal with.  If I lose that program I'm in deep 'doh' because it can't be replaced.    I'll look at what Biz suggested unless you've got a great idea Roy.  To be honest I'm a bit freaked out about the process and nobody around here will guarantee they can make the transition for me.  You've known of me long enough to know I'm far from stupid around this type of stuff but I'm treading in new territory.

Thanks Roy.  Much appreciated on the response.

First off, just try and copying the installation folder and contents to the new system, then find the exe for the program and try running it.

If it does not run, it might give an error which will give you a clue as to what to do next.

+1 on what Skuzzy suggested, but with a twist: Copy the files and folders on a memory stick and try to run it from there. If it works, copy them on the hard disk. If it doesn't, there'll be no remains on your hard disk that might interfere with the advanced transition procedures.

Another thing to do: If your program has a backup feature, create one just in case.
