Has anyone had the opportunity to try the HDK2 in AH yet?

I'm still waiting for my HDK2 to arrive.  I did try it at E3, though the HDK2 demo goggles they had at E3 still used diffusion film technology to reduce the screen door effect while the commercial version of the HDK2 will ship with image quality enhancements to reduce the screen door effect that is supposed to be more effective than diffusion film technology.

When I tried the HDK2, image quality wise it was really no worse or better than either the Rift or the Vive, though the screen door effect was more noticeable on the HDK2 than on the Rift or the Vive.  Since the HDK2 is open source and compatible with OpenVR/SteamVR, it will work with any game the Vive supports and since Rift unlocked their software to allow Vive compatibility, the HDK2 should also work with any Rift game.

Another caveat since its open source is that there will be more choices for 3rd party hardware.

One last thing that does put the HDK2 above the Rift and Vive is upgrade ability.  With the Rift and Vive, when a new version or update comes out, you will have to buy new goggles.  Not so with the HDK2.  When an upgrade comes out, (like Leap Motion) all you have to do is purchase the upgrade kit and upgrade your HDK2 goggles to the new version without having to buy a new set of goggles.

The only thing I wish all three VR goggles had was the ergonomic comfort of the Sony Playstation VR goggles.  Those suckers you can wear for hours and not feel discomfort.

Thanks for the response Ack-Ack,

I look forward to your impression of the HDK2.

One of the things that attracted me to the HDK2, besides it's lower cost, is the fact that it is upgrade-able.

I know I read that someone else here is also waiting for their HDK2 and I'm looking forward to their review as well.

Looks like I'm going to find out for myself.

Just bought the HDK2, and a 6G gtx 1060, for what a Rift costs.  :x

 Here's to hoping it works.

I've been waiting for their email, singed up and they said they would notify once available, vintage Razer, no go on that.  Manually ordered today, 600 CDN free shipping and 1 year warranty.  We'll see how it stacks up against the Vive and Rift now.

Edit - from what I've read on Reddit regarding those who have just received their HDK2 sets, for DCS/Elite Dangerous/WT there are some pretty serious problems, drift and otherwise, and that it has great potential but still a fair bit of a way to go.  We'll see I guess.

I went through Amazon $350, free shipping. They said it was in stock and I should receive it by 10/26 so we'll see.

Wut? Doesn't it use optical tracking?

Managed to get into AH and fly with the HDK2 last night. It looks really cool, I can't really describe how cool it is.
I'm having some issues with tracking, and can't get steamvr to launch when I'm in direct mode. I didn't expect it to be trouble free since it is a development kit, and I am kind of enjoying the challenge of getting everything to work.

'Really cool' is a good description, and I agree.  :aok

Sucks that there are issues but if they are expected then probably not too bad.

for me, and I'm biased and I don't fly much but I do like the DR1 the best.   :x
being able to lean over and look down over the side and look through the wings is pretty great.

Yaks, Ki-61, even the I-16 is a hoot (when you look behind the tail stab looks so close you feel like you can reach out and grab it).

Have you been able to compare this rig with the Rift? What video card are you running? I have the GTX 970 and know that is at the low end for Rift...

I can't compare it to a Rift, since I've never experienced what a Rift is like.

I will say that the tracking for the HDK2 is not very stable, and for me at this time not usable in game. I'm probably experiencing a bottle neck at my cpu as it is below the minimum requirements for VR (E8400 @ 3.0 GHz). So I'm not sure that all of my tracking problems stem from the HDK2's tracking set-up.

Besides the tracking the VR experience is just to cool. It is hard to describe what it is like to sit in the plane as opposed to sitting in front of a monitor. the VR experience has impressed me so much I'm now saving up for a new computer and a Rift.

I'm using a gtx 1060.
