a readable map
« on: October 11, 2016, 05:56:18 PM »
Thanks for decreasing the "myself" icon on the map. It helped a bit. But it still seems to be a bit unreadable, depending on the zoom level. Well, anything but zoomed in to a sector or less seems hard to read. A list of wishes:

  • Smaller icon sizes. The size of the protected field (and factories) seems much better.
  • Possibly, the size could scale with the zoom level of the map, particularly when zooming out, shrinking a lot would be helpful to maintain an overview. Fighters/bombers down to iconless dots when fully zoomed out.
  • If fields that allow spawning need to be visually distinguishable, colors of others could be darkened/lightened, instead of increasing the size of the spawnables?
  • More consistent aircraft/tank icon sizes. Zoomed out, a bombers wingspan is 50 miles, that's a bit too much. Consistent to other small sizes, not increasing the size of the small ones.
  • Something else to indicate radio transmissions. A transmitting bomber increases to a wingspan of 100 miles zoomed out. Flashing? Different border color? Something. Just size is very distracting.
  • Reduced pulse width of the flashing bases. Currently they are flashing at 50%, making it visually unclear whether the natural color is one or the other. Depending on the colors setting, it could be an own or enemy base. With short flash spikes, the natural color would be clear even while flashing.
  • Less clutter like shadows. There's enough meaningful information to make the map look interesting. It doesn't need shadows, especially such shadows that are 3x the size of an icon away from the icon itself (like on fighters).

edit: Just tried offline - and the sizes are much better there. Either there's a magic setting that can be set differently for offline and online, or some kind of bug that causes huge icons in online mode only? (would post screen shots, but no attachments here?)

Upload to a image hoster (imgur, postimage, tinypic, ect.) then copy the URL of the image. Paste the image URL in the post, highlight the URL, then click the image button, below the Bold button.

An option to unfold the map would be great.  You know, like full-screen.   Brand X had that option and it was great.

When I use a kneeboard (rare these days) it is usually at least two panels.  The size of my "clipboard" is not the limiting factor.

Screenshots are in the bug-reports now. I doubt that part is intended, looks more like a bug.

To add another wish for the map: A 5-minute (or configurable) flight path estimation: A line drawn from the current position, using ground speed and heading to estimate the positions in X minute (e.g., 5 minutes), with markers for each minute. Example: http://www.skydemon.aero/inflight/georeferencedplate.jpg

And to add to this: Data could not only be shown for the own aircraft, but also for other friendlies - maybe limited to on the same voice channel/squad/mission?

How about squares circles and triangles instead of icons? The ah2 style i think is much more readable and I'd be happy deducing aircraft heading from motion of the dot. I find it hard to find the town dot without zooming.

That would help reduce the "color confusion".  Also, if the "flash" color was black it would be easier to choose three colors to designate the countries.  There would be no doubt about which was the "natural" base color and which was the "flash".  The only unusable "natural" base color would be black.  As it is now, each "natural" base color choice also eliminates the complement of that color as a choice for the other countries.[/list]

Also, if the "flash" color was black ...

Sounds good, but black might be a bit harsh. Some very dark version of the selected color could look nice, like colored lamp, which is even colored while off.
