I rode with Save's C.202 as a passenger (.join) in the Tunisia scenarion just now, and when he was firing I did not hear the shots, nor see any tracers, nor hit sprites.

OK, it's a very old bug then...

Ride-alongs are great for new players. I used to get a lot of join requests when we had influx of noobs. The shooting is the most interesting part for them and if then cannot see and hear it, it ruins the whole experience!
