German u-boat U-995 at the Laboe Naval Memorial
« on: October 23, 2016, 09:02:26 AM »
In my continuing video series documenting my road trip in Central Europe this summer we visited U-995 at the Laboe Naval Memorial just north of Kiel, Germany. This u-boat has a special history; it served in the Kriegsmarine from 1943 to the end of the war in Europe. She completed nine patrols and participated in five wolfpacks. When the war ended she was surrendered in Trondheim, Norway and became on of three Type VIIC u-boats to serve in the Norwegain navy as the K-class. KNM "Kaura" served until she was decommissioned in 1965. She then was offered to the German government for the ceremonial price of one Deutsche Mark. The offer was turned down; but the Boat was saved by the German Navy League. She became a museum ship at Laboe Naval Memorial in October 1971. She is the only surviving Type VII u-boat in the world.

Cool!  Thanks for the video!

The mechanical complication of those boats boggles the mind.

Yes. Looked like a plumber's nightmare. Apparently incorrectly operating the high pressure toilet sunk a u-boat once...  :uhoh

Great video GS, I just rewatched Das Boot for my yearly viewing, incredible how 995 looks compared to the set on that film, great detail in your video.  Torps were interesting to see.

We just need the Swedish(Norwegian) Chef translator app, hahaha.  Borty borty bort!
