AHIII Page File Usage
« on: December 13, 2016, 08:38:38 PM »
Hi All,

I set up my MSI AB graph to graph page file usage then ran the game to see how much of my box's page file is being used by the game.

Provided below is a snippet of the MSI AB graphs that show this..........

This is showing that AHIII does page out to disk while running to the tune of about 2631MB over the page file size at desktop (desktop page file size @ 4237MB) as graphed on my box. The page file usage graph is the very bottom graph line.

So far my Samsung SM961 128Gb AHCI PCI-E SSD is showing no signs of sector wear or sector loss w\ performance holding on par w\ the benchmark runs I ran upon new install of this SSD (this SSD's sole purpose is for page file duty).

Box is running AHIII Patch13 Dx11 very well.

Just ran AHIII Patch14 Dx9 version for a while then looked at the MSI AB graphs and noticed something interesting.................. ..

AHIII Dx11 does more paging out to disk than AHIII Dx9 does by about 980MB, even though Dx9 shows to work the CPU\GPU more than Dx11 running the same AHIII client using the exact same settings...........

Now I wonder what's going on under Dx11 API that is creating\causing the extra page outs vs Dx9 API....................?

Hhhmmmmm..................... ....

It's library time....................

Is this realy the page file usage reported by the tool ?
In many programs (like dxdiag) this is the name for the whole available memory, both physical and virtual.

You are aware that the page file is controlled by Windows?  No application can impact how Windows manages that.

Just ran AHIII Patch14 Dx11 w\ MS Performance Monitor set up to measure the following:

Page File % In Use
Page File Peak % In Use
Memory Pages Output\sec
Process aceshigh11.exe Page File Bytes

Results showed that Windows set up the game w\ 100% page file bytes (corresponds to the approx 2631MB that I had previously noted using AB).
Page File % in Use was approx 2.4% (so using math this would approx to around 63.14MB of the 2631MB that Windows actually set up)
Page File Peak % in Use was even smaller...around 1.8% (again using math this came out to around 1.14MB of the 63.14MB in potential use at any 1 instance by AHIII)
Memory Pages Output\sec was 0% (this measurement is the 1 that tells the story as this indicates that during the time I was flying around in AHIII there were no page outs occurring from system mem to virtual mem....no writes monitored from AHIII to page file....all due to the 16Gb of system mem onboard my box being far more than enough so AHIII\Windows didn't need to write out any data from system mem to disk due to mem overburden). Now I know why I'm not seeing any issues w\ page file usage on my Sammy SM961 AHCI 128Gb PCI-E SSD.........

 :aok

So from this exercise it shows that Windows (if page file is set up as System Managed) will set up a page file size for a process but will dynamically grow it\reduce it in size to accomodate page outs if\as they occur once system mem has reached overburden (full). If mem isn't full Windows doesn't page out but will maintain the initial page file size (which explains why the page file didn't resize itself once it was established when the game was started and never resized itself while the game ran and Windows then flushed it once the game was exited).

This also shows that at this time I have no need to upsize system mem capacity on my box thus no need to switch to Win 10.........yet, as to upsize system mem on my box in excess of 16Gb I would have to jettison Win 7 HP.

Gonna run this again when AHIII is busy to see if all as found now holds up then.

You are aware that the page file is controlled by Windows?  No application can impact how Windows manages that.

Yes I am.

 :salute

PS--Also shows that any performance issues are not mem-related\page file related on my box......will be CPU\device related.........the way I want it to be.
Will be upgrading the HOTAS connection to my box soon (got a new 7-USB 3.0 port USB\PCI-E add-in card w\ 12v SATA power connector & 3 USB 2.0 3' cable extensions coming to remove my old trusty Belkin ExpressBus USB 1.1 4-port hub that I've used for the last 15 yrs to hook up my CH USB HOTAS to separate USB ports\powered individually and if all goes well may also hook up my X7 DAC-AMP to it as well so the only USB devices hooked up to mobo USB clusters will be trackball and keyboard.

That limitation of maximum amount of memory is 16 GB for windows 7 HP 64 bit, is why I always recommended buying/getting Windows 7 Professional (or Ultimate) 64 bit....which iirc, will let you go all the way up to 192 GB 's maximum...

I've always manually set my pagefile size for as far back as I can remember....

Interesting research you've done, Pudgie, thank you for sharing

I have no page file in my Win7 pro 64 bit  system.

16 gig ram, never have to use it after upgrading from 8 gig.

Hi TC,

Yeah I know what you mean.

I was looking at a set of Corsair Vengence LED 32Gb 3200Mhz DDR4 4 x 8Gb Quad Channel mem kit cause I was liking the red LED\HSF design and I can fit it on my mobo now due to the Corsair H80iv2 AIO but knew that I couldn't use it due to me having Win 7 HP SP1 installed and found that Corsair doesn't make this particular mem in a 16Gb Quad Channel kit, only a 16Gb Dual Channel mem kit as the smallest DIMM size made is 8Gb......... I could get them in the Dominator series BUT they aren't LED..............

A lot of trouble to go thru for some bling....................but I LIKE it!!!

 :D

Well now I can hold off since I really don't have any more justification to buy em now except because I can and for bling................
