Pet Peeve
« on: December 17, 2016, 12:17:21 AM »
Sorry but this little pet peeve has been festering for many years now.  We do not have any "buffs" in the game, we have bombers.  A "BUFF" is a B-52 bomber and not a generic term for bombers.  That is all.

I thought this when I first joined the game in 2007 "wait there's no B52s in WW2"...kinda just went with it and now it's definitely a habit.

The word buff, among other more nefarious terms, is a color which is often associated with the color of tanned hide or just hide.  A color that might have been used on WW2 bombers.  Not saying it was used  during WW2 just a possibility that buff was associated with bombers with a particle type of camouflage color.

When I used historically 'correct' terminology, very few understood "Möbelwagen" or "Dicke Autos".
I had to accept that the terminology in game was somewhat different.  :old:

The expression Ack Ack originated in the battlefields of World War 1. The phonetic alphabet used in the British trenches used the following symbols.

A- Ack
B-Beer
C-Charlie
D-Don
E-Edward
F-Freddie
G-Gee
H-Harry
I-Ink
J-Johnnie
K-King
L-London
M-Emma (YES THAT IS CORRECT)
N-Nuts
O-Oranges
P-Pip
Q-Queen
R-Robert
S-Esses
T-Toc
U-Uncle
V-Vic
W-William
X-X-ray
Y-Yorker
Z-Zebra

Anti aircraft fire was referred to as AA or Ack-Ack. The name stuck and is still in use today.

While we're at this...

CAP missions are flown over friendly bases/fleets. They are defensive.  One does not CAP an enemy base or fleet.

Whew - I feel so much better getting that off my chest!

For some of us, flying buffs is a state of dress.

Do you REALLY want a visual on this?

Ack-Ack is right.  I served in the Marine Corps in mid-late sixties. The B52 was called BUFF. Have not heard of any bombers before that being called a Buff. Of course, I might have missed it.

Because we want to.  We enjoy using apocryphal terminology.   That is all.

The B-52 is one of two to get that name in Vietnam. We used it for the Jolly Green rescue choppers as well. It stood for "Big Ugly Friendly *^#$@!"

Those flattops we call CVs are really more like CVLs, or even Jeep Carriers.

Some modern terms are bound to leak into a WW2 sim but I agree.
