This problem dates back to AH2. Certain airplanes have restricted cockpit views that obscure some of the gauges. I have my fwd hat switch mapped to look fwd view. While holding this position on the hat, I moved the view using page down and arrows to get the best view possible of the gauges. Now every plane has limits on how low and how far back you can move but on certain planes, it is impossible to see all of the gauges. Changing FOV has no effect.
Here are two views from the La-5. The first is the maximum view I can get with the fwd hat switch. The second is the fwd hat switch + F8, which enables free look.

It is impractical to use F8 in conjunction with the hat switch, because the views are set to work in F1 mode and F8 makes it impossible to use the hat. To return to normal, you would have to hit F1 and anytime you need to check your gauges, repeat the whole process.
The La isn't the only plane I have issues with:
A6M - many gauges blocked
F4U - oil and engine temp gauges blocked
Hurricane - many gauges blocked
I-16 - many gauges blocked
Ki-43 - many gauges blocked
Me-410 - can see all the gauges, but only from too far away to read them
P-38 - flap gauge partially to mostly blocked, depending on model
Spitfire - ammo counters, fuel gauges blocked on all models.
