New to TrackIR.... looking for some expert advice
« on: January 22, 2017, 03:51:04 AM »
TIR5 has been collecting dust for 5+ years, i started playing with DCS and snapviews aren't an option there.

Like it, decided to try it in AH as well. I get by using snapviews combined with sticksets settings - basically same way every other WB import does :)

Here is a problem:
no matter how i turn my head with trackir - i can't get a good 6 view.
Below - 2 screenshots - one with snapview, other with track ir.

How do i get around this ? If this is the best i can get, it would be a huge hindrance during a fight.

any tips for oldtimer struggling with modern technology ? :)

Use the view hat to look back. Lean to one side to see around the tail.

leaning gives me what you see on screenshot. Seems that trackir doens't register back and forth movement well when you're almost at 90 degrees to it. Do you really using trackit + hatswitch as standard setup ?

I am still learning myself so I can only pass along what helped me from others' advice.

I found that adjusting the "curves" so that my head movement is smooth and also responsive to a 180 degree turn worked the best for me.

I still have not found out how I can use hat views along with the TIR view, past simply turning it off in certain situations.

I get the same view with trackir as you get with the hat switch.  I will share my settings when i get home thursday.  Until then, practice lean then turn. Do not lean forward, lean to side. I did a vid a while ago showing the views if you turn smoothly.  https://youtu.be/yHRpDeIJSLg

I tried using other people's curves, and found experimenting and setting my own worked the best for me.  I am still getting used to TIR after years of using hatswitch/button views only.  Perhaps mostly from old habit I still use my hat switch views as well as TIR, and like having both.  I still sometimes have trouble using TIR only for 6 views, and find using a back view with TIR often works best for me.

I watched your video Fess and am going to have to try your technique.

I have been using TrackIR for all different flight simulators since it came out.  In my opinion, the absolute best and smoothest TrackIR experience is when Yaw and Pitch are the only two axis being used and you have a Smooth profile set.

Rolling, lateral movement, vertical, etc I find are not necessary and do more harm than good. I also set Field Of View in Video settings to 90.  AH3 works very well with trackIR and will roll your head over the aircraft by itself when turning, even when roll and other trackir axis are turned off. It has a great way of implementing TrackIR when you only have YAW and PITCH enabled in the TrackIR settings.  I also dragg the two pins up a bit higher in the Pitch section to exaggerate my head movement upwards.

Check out my setting here:

You need to turn up the gain so your head isn't turned 90 degrees to see back wards. It should only move +/- 30deg or so.
There is also a setting called "relative" that you need to enable. this makes the side to side, and forward backward movements relative to the the view you're seeing, instead of your actual head position. play around with it.

Oh yes, I found that too when I was struggling with Trackir....at first I was not sure it was worthwhile.....but my squaddies kept assuring me it was.  It didn't take long to see the benefits once I fiddled with it enough and got used to it.  Now I don't like to fly without it.  Regarding 6 o'clock views I can get good ones sort of following Fess's approach, but still easy and most reliable for me, as FLS said, is to use a button for back view and just turn my head a bit.

Took a long time to both get used to using and also tweak a profile that suits me. I'm still tweaking it. I have a hard time using hat views now. TIR has become second nature to the point where when watching someone else's videos that AREN'T using it I'm always tilting my head around trying to change the views!

The single most important thing IMO is, if things aren't working the way you like it, keep tweaking it until they do.  If something's bugging you, it's likely to keep bugging you until you fix it.

Try to find a profile that works close to how you want it to, and tweak from there.  Fugitive had a post with a big bunch of profiles for download but for some reason I can't find it the last couple days.

TrackIR's settings are the single most personal setting in the game IMO.  Way more individual than joystick settings.  The time spent tweaking is well worth it.

Myself, I use a very aggressive profile for moving around the cockpit but for the most part only use side to side movement in actual use.  About the only thing I can't get a decent six view in is an F6F and to a lesser extent, the P47D11.  Everything else I can see out the back fine.

This!   :aok

I tried all these and it was interetsting to see what others used, but ended up not being happy with any until I tweaked one that works for me.
