looking for a wireless card
« on: January 22, 2017, 06:56:30 PM »
Hey all. Because I was expecting to use ethernet only on my PC build, I passes up options with wireless/wifi capability. Because of some changes while I was gone, I can only use wifi in the barracks now, so I'm needing a wireless card, hopefully a relatively cheap one. Any suggestions?

Another thing I need is a fan splitter, so I can plug Two fans into one fan slot on my mobo. I expect that to be pretty easy to find, though.

For those interested, by build came along pretty well. A few minor issues here and there, backtracking a few times, but with enough beer anything is possible. Found out my system wouldn't start up to BIOS until I removed the GPU, so I'll be needing to update all my system drivers before that goes in.

Anyway, thanks in advance, and cheers!

Hi Joe,

Not sure if this qualifies as inexpensive for you, but this is what I used and like it more than the cheap USB one I had prior to this:

Good Luck man!     :salute

The cheapest way would be a USB stick, however as Daddy said the PCI-e version might prove much more efficient.

As you know, wireless is not the optimal connection for online gaming because of being half duplex which means that faulty packets require the entire batch to come through before being able to send an error message. A wired connection will send the error message and get the resent packet immediately. If using a max 100 m cable is not an option, you might also consider using powerline ethernet, using the electricity wiring of your house for connecting your computer to the router.

As for a fan splitter, you might consider getting an inexpensive front panel fan controller.

If you're going the wireless adapter route and intend on gaming, do not use a wireless USB adapter.

Thanks for the suggestions all.

I managed to slave my laptop wireless connection to my desktop via ethernet as a temporary fix. Updated everything, needed to update bios to recognize the gpu, and plugged it in. Works like a charm!

As appealing as a USB adapter is, I feel like the card would be the better option. I'll be looking to order one soon.

I'll look into that. Thank you.
