Hud update
« on: January 24, 2017, 12:38:50 PM »
Love the new HUD setup. Would like to suggest a couple a updates:

1. Allow the "Sight Mode" function to apply to it as well (can't see it in the direct sunlight).

2. Include the compass setting, i.e. 235 deg

I'd like to +1 having the compass up there with the Speed/Alt/Autopilot HUD along with a Direction in addition to a number if possible. Something like 0 Deg - North or 135 - SE.

A rotational compass of some sort would be a nice addition.

I would think a small circle with a direction arrow or line would be more useful then digital?

Yeah, wouldn't need numbers.  Arrow or line would be great.  :aok

Yeah that would work, I know in FSO our CO tells take a heading of XXX, and it seems like I can never find the compass on the instrument panel.

I like the idea of a compass with a little arrow, but here's my reason I'd like to have a digital readout. My health/eyesight is bad and I have trouble reading the compass in the cockpit a lot of times. During scenarios as a Bomber GL I often have to call out heading so my escorts know where to find me and where I'm going but this can be troublesome with my eyesight. I'd love to have a compass with a number that can be quickly read out.

A compass read out like this would enhance players trying to find each other in FSO or special events on VOX using only the map to give location. I think a number display would be a better way to communicate under VOX brevity in FSO. Or, have a ring with a tick mark or arrow that fits the map window and can be adjusted for opacity. Have 8 directions as numbers just inside of the ring. When you change direction the arrow or tick mark moves with you. Or make a 100Mil HUD version of this that can be dragged anywhere in the cockpit like the current HUD display.

As for MA play, it's really useless since you have dar and the map.

This is all assuming that I know my left from my right  :neener:

Anyone else forced to carry an object in their right hand during training?  Or was I the only one ?  :uhoh

Digital is better for giving headings for formations.

Accelerometer would also be a useful option.

Numbers are great for navigation tasks but we don't really have need of that in AH. For formation flying a tool that allows guys to visually correlate "Snap right, 210 heading" with the arrow pointing 30 degrees left of south would quickly build their SA level with regards to compass headings.

In the real world, you "know" where north is because you know what time of day it is and the sun position and your brain automatically calculates direction from shadows and the movement of shadows as you maneuver. It feels instinctive. In AH, the time is always different than what our internal clock tells us it is and it is always changes at a rate that is foreign to us so that instinct is totally shot to hell. (That's my argument for high noon all the time)

My personal preference for a quick compass would be a simple arrow that shows your nose position with north always being up. If that was combined with a data block it would perfect. I can do without a circle.

Something like this

Are we still looking at adding something like this to the HUD? Actually I like the digital indication better. :old:

Oh yeah, thank you for the Sight Mode addition.

You only think you like the digital presentation better. Having flown both, a simple arrow is world's better. There is no reason the digital could not be present with the arrow but absent the arrow, digital is pretty marginal for a quick look.

Having used both, I prefer the digital, I look at the instrument panel for the dial. :rock
