It is the user's decision to install any drivers.  I'm of the opinion that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Myself, I usually install the newer drivers just to check them out.  If I have an issue, I simply roll back to the last working driver.

This particular driver has an additional setting in the NVCP called 'Optimize For Compute Performance'.
Naturally I had to install this driver to check that out.

Can a new driver, 378.49 for instance, be installed over the older driver 376.33 without issues?

I haven't been in the Nvidia corner for a few years and can't make the 'built-in' update function work.

I would like to add, some people think that a new driver will fix all their gaming issues.
A lot of times, their problem is not even driver related.  The real problem is that their rig is just not strong enough to play
the games they are attempting to play.
I see a lot of that here.  For example, when HiTech releases an update/patch or goes to a new version.  Of course legitimate bugs get
reported, but complaint's are reported that it made their game worse.  It's not always a problem with updating, but rather
their PC is not quite strong enough for the smooth 60fps experience a lot of wish we could achieve.

In my case I'm running nothing less the 59 fps on a 1070 plugged into a i7 pci2 Sandybridge. The ride is very smooth and all the bells and whistles are turned on but I feel I'm not seeing everything the game has to offer because of the pci2 bus. Yes, if I'm right, I'm hoping a driver can help with that.

It is not recommended to install Nvidia Driver over an old install.
Uninstall the old driver first.  This program is highly recommended on the Geforce Forums and is what I use. Wagnard DDU Uninstaller
It will clean any traces of the old driver, which can cause issues with a new install.
Make sure to read the instructions on how to use it.  Basically, be in safe mode you run DDU.  Next, restart your PC normally and install your new driver.

BTW, I have not run into any issues with this driver as of yet.
